Sol-gel based amine-functionalized SPME fibers (PDMS-weak anion exchanger) were prepared and used for direct mode extraction of dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), and arsenate (As(V)) from aqueous solutions followed by HPLC-ICPMS determination. Two different methods of coating were employed: (i) electrospinning and (ii) dip coating. Electrospinning was used for the first time for preparation of sol-gel based SPME fibers and was found to be superior in terms of extracted amount of arsenicals, coating homogeneity, accessibility of amine groups on the surface, and preparation time for a single fiber. Various parameters such as solution pH, extraction time, agitation speed, extraction temperature, and ionic strength were studied. Optimum extraction conditions were determined as pH of 5.0, extraction time of 30 min, agitation speed of 700 rpm, and extraction temperature of 20 degrees C. Extraction ability of the novel coating decreased by the addition of NaCl as a consequence of the competition between anionic arsenic species and chloride ions for active sites of the weak anion exchanger. This novel sol-gel coating prepared by electrospinning was found to be promising for SPME applications. Vibrational spectroscopy revealed the alignment of PDMS chains by elongational force under electrospinning process. The chain alignment accordingly orients the pendant amino functional groups perpendicular to the fiber surface, which may develop the free active functional groups available to the medium and lead to the enhancement of the extraction performance. Moreover, the proposed coating strategy through electrospinning might be able to break new ground for various applications in analytical chemistry as well as other disciplines.

Zinc borate was prepared from the reaction of zinc oxide and boric acid in the absence or presence of cumene terminated poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride), PSMA, added as a surfactant at varying concentrations (0.1-1 wt.% of water) to the reaction medium to investigate its effect on the growth and agglomeration of particles during reaction. Synthesized zinc borates were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in comparison to unmodifie...
Rhodium(0) nanoparticles supported on nanotitania as highly active catalyst in hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of ammonia borane
Akbayrak, Serdar; Gencturk, Serap; MORKAN, İzzet; Özkar, Saim (Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), 2014-01-01)
Rhodium(0) nanoparticles supported on the surface of titanium dioxide (Rh(0)@TiO2) were in situ generated from the reduction of rhodium(III) ions impregnated on nanotitania during the hydrolysis of ammonia borane. They were isolated from the reaction solution by centrifugation and characterized by a combination of advanced analytical techniques. The results show that (i) highly dispersed rhodium(0) nanoparticles with sizes in the range 1.3-3.8 nm were formed on the surface of titanium dioxide, (ii) Rh(0)@Ti...
Aryl butenoic acid derivatives as a new class of histone deacetylase inhibitors: synthesis, in vitro evaluation, and molecular docking studies

New aryl butenoic acid derivatives have been synthesized by combining hydroxy- or methoxy-substituted phenyl rings as the capping group, with a double bond in the short linker as well as metal binding groups, enoic ester, and salts bearing either methyl or morpholine. These compounds have been shown to possess promising histone deacetylase inhibition activities via in vitro fluorometric assay and molecular docking studies.
Polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl phenacyl pyridinium) salts as photoinitiators for free radical and cationic polymerizations and their photoinduced molecular associations

Polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl phenacyl pyridinium hexafluorophosphate) (PS-b-PVPP) was synthesized by reacting polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) prepared by living anionic polymerization with phenacyl bromide followed by counter anion exchange reaction. The ability of PS-b-PVPP to act as a photoinitiator for both free radical and cationic polymerizations is demonstrated. In the free radical polymerization, the initiation step involves the decay of the excited state of the salt with homolytic bond rupture of...
Vulcan-Supported Pt Electrocatalysts for PEMFCs Prepared using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Deposition

In this study, supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) deposition was used to prepare vulcan-supported Pt (Pt/Vulcan) electrocatalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), and the effects of process variables on the properties of the electrocatalysts were investigated. The two different methods used to reduce the organometallic precursor were thermal reduction in nitrogen at atmospheric pressure and thermal reduction in scCO(2). In the former method, the maximum Pt loading achieved was 9%, and t...
