An analysis of the prevalence of malaria in Turkey over the last 85 years
Piyal, Birgul; Akdur, Recep; Ocaktan, Esin; Yozgatlıgil, Ceylan (Informa UK Limited, 2013-01-01)
Background: Affecting 106 countries, malaria is a major global burden. Though intensive antimalaria efforts in Turkey have been successful in bringing down the number of cases, historically malaria was a serious public health concern.
Immunoproteomic analysis of Bordetella pertussis and identification of new immunogenic proteins
Altindis, Emrah; Tefon, Burcu E.; Yildirim, Volkan; Ozcengiz, Erkan; Becher, Doete; Hecker, Michael; Özcengiz, Gülay (Elsevier BV, 2009-01-22)
Bordetella pertussis is the causative agent of highly communicable respiratory infection whooping cough (pertussis) which remains one of the world's leading causes of vaccine-preventable deaths. In the present study, total soluble proteins extracted from two B. pertussis strains, Tohama I and the local isolate Saadet were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and analyzed by Western blotting for their reactivity with the antisera obtained from the mice immunized with inactivated whole cells as we...
Predicting depressive symptoms among the mothers of children with leukaemia: A caregiver stress model perspective
Demirtepe-Saygili, Dilek; Bozo Özen, Özlem (Informa UK Limited, 2011-01-01)
The aim of this study was to find out the predictors of depressive symptoms of mothers of children with leukaemia. The potential predictors were chosen in the light of the caregiver stress model [Pearlin, Mullan, Semple, and Skaff, 1990. Caregiving and the stress process: An overview of concepts and their measures. The Gerontologist, 30(5), 583-594.], which examines the caregiver stress as composed of many factors such as the background variables, primary and secondary stressors, mediators and psychological...

The growth behavior of Chlorella vulgaris in the presence of 4-chlorophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol
ŞAHİNKAYA, Erkan; Dilek, Filiz Bengü (Elsevier BV, 2009-03-01)
Toxicity of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) on the growth of Chlorella vulgaris was investigated in batch reactors. Results revealed that 4-CP did not adversely affect the growth of algae up to 20 mg/L, however higher concentrations inhibited growth appreciably and no growth was detected at 100 mg/L. 4-CP also caused some physiological changes in the algal cells as increasing initial 4-CP concentration caused a linear decrease in chlorophyll a (chl-a) content of the cell. 2,4-DCP up t...
