We study third-harmonic generation in a quantum well represented by a Poschl-Teller confining potential under an applied electric field. This potential is well suited for such purposes as it can easily become asymmetrical by a correct choice of its parameter set. We calculate the third harmonic generation within the density matrix formalism. Numerical results for a typical GaAs quantum well are presented. We investigate the third-harmonic generation for several values of asymmetry parameters under small electric fields. It is found to be enhanced with the increasing electric field. While the resulting third-harmonic generation peak is promising it is still quite smaller than that observed in similar quantum well systems. (C) 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

Nonlinear intersubband optical absorption of Si delta-doped GaAs under an electric field
Yildirim, Hasan; Tomak, Mehmet (Wiley, 2006-10-01)
We study the nonlinear intersubband optical absorption of a single Si delta-doped GaAs sheet placed in the middle of a GaAs quantum well and subjected to an electric field. The Schrodinger and Poisson equations are solved self-consistently for various electric field strengths. The self-consistent solutions provide us with the correct confining potential, the wave functions, the corresponding subband energies and the subband occupations. The nonlinear optical intersubband absorption spectra are discussed wit...
Electronic structure of a many-electron spherical quantum dot with an impurity
Sahin, M; Tomak, Mehmet (American Physical Society (APS), 2005-09-01)
We investigate the electronic structure of a many-electron spherical quantum dot with and without hydrogenic impurity. The number of electrons is taken as N=18. The density functional theory is used within local density approximation. Total energy, chemical potential, addition energy spectra, and the shell structure are determined and the results obtained are compared for cases with and without impurity. It is observed that the capacitive energy with the impurity increases in the 1s shell with respect to th...
Theoretical investigation of intersubband nonlinear optical rectification in AlxlGa1-xlAs/GaAs/AlxrGa1-xrAs asymmetric rectangular quantum wells
Karabulut, Ibrahim; Atav, Uelfet; Safak, Haluk; Tomak, Mehmet (Wiley, 2007-09-01)
In this study, a theoretical investigation of intersubband nonlinear optical rectification in Alx1Ga1-x1As/ GaAs/AlxrGa1-xrAs asymmetric rectangular quantum wells is presented. The electronic states in the asymmetric rectangular quantum well are described within the framework of the envelope function approach including the effects of band nonparabolicity and the effective mass mismatch. The nonlinear optical rectification is calculated using the density matrix formalism. It is found that the nonlinear optic...
Nonlinear Seebeck and Peltier effects in quantum point contacts
Çipiloğlu, Mustafa A; Turgut, Sadi; Tomak, Mehmet (Wiley, 2004-09-01)
The charge and entropy currents across a quantum point contact are expanded as a series in powers of the applied bias voltage and the temperature difference. After that, the expansions of the Seebeck voltage in temperature difference and the Peltier heat in current are obtained. With a suitable choice of the average temperature and chemical potential, the lowest order nonlinear term in both cases appear to be of third order. The behavior of the third-order coefficients in both cases are then investigated fo...
Optoelectronic and electrical properties of TlGaS2 single crystal
Qasrawi, AF; Hasanlı, Nızamı (Wiley, 2005-10-01)
The optoelectronic and electrical properties of TIGaS2 single crystals have been investigated by means of room temperature transmittance and reflectance spectral analysis, Hall coefficient, dark electrical resistivity and photocurrent measurements in the temperature range of 200-350 K. The optical data have revealed an indirect and direct allowed transition band gaps of 2.45 and 2.51 eV, an oscillator and dispersion energy of 5.04 and 26.45 eV, respectively, a static dielectric constant of 6.25 and static r...
