In order to compress stereo image pairs effectively, disparity compensation is the most widely used method. In this paper we examined the effects of using different disparity maps and their properties in an embedded JPEG2000 based disparity compensated stereo image coder. These properties include the block size, estimation method and the resulting entropy of the disparity map. Experimental results show that basic block matching gives better results than ground truth, especially on occluded regions and boundaries.

Development of a MATLAB-based toolbox for tide Gauge records using Hilbert-Huang transform
Jamali, Aydin; Karslıoğlu, Mahmut Onur; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2013)
Tidal records are usually processed on the basis of Harmonic Analysis which in fact works well for linear and stationary data. It is a mathematical procedure which divides the data in a finite number of harmonic constituents. But the tidal data is in reality non-linear and non-stationary because of atmospheric and meteorological parameters. Therefore in this work a MATLAB –based Toolbox has been developed for hourly tidal data collected from four tide gauge stations at the Turkish costs using Hilbert Huang ...
Joint utilization of fixed and variable-length codes for improving synchronization immunity for image transmission
Alatan, Abdullah Aydın (1998-01-01)
Robust transmission of images is achieved by using fixed and variable-length coding together without much loss in compression efficiency. The probability distribution function of a DCT coefficient can be divided into two regions using a threshold; so that one portion contains roughly equiprobable transform coefficients. While fixed-length coding, which is a powerful solution to the synchronization problem, is used in this inner equiprobable region without sacrificing compression, the outer (saturating) regi...
Cognitive aspects of image zooming
Öncül, Gaye; Tarı, Sibel; Tekman, Hasan Gürkan; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2002)
In this work, digital image zooming methods and image distortion metrics are examined in terms of a quality criterion based on image appearance. Neurophysiological and psychophysical foundations of perception driven image distortion metrics are presented. Results of a comparative study based on both perceptual distortion metrics and conventional distortion metrics for standard zooming methods are discussed. Open problems in image quality definition as well as image enlargement methods are presented and impr...
Implementation of an enhanced fixed point Variable Bit-Rate MELP vocoder on TMS320C549

In this paper, a fixed point Variable Bit-Rate (VBR) Mixed Excitation Linear Predictive Coding (MELP(TM)) vocoder is presented. The VBR-MELP vocoder is also implemented on a TMS320C54x and it achieves virtually indistinguishable federal standard MELP quality at bit-rates between 1.0 to 1.6 kb/s. The backbone of VBR-MELP vocoder is similar to that of federal standard MELP. It utilizes a novel sub-band based voice activity detector in the back-end of encoder to discriminate background noise from speech activi...
Comparison of linear and quadratic hexahedral edge elements in electromagnetic scattering problems
Yılmaz, Ayşen; Kuzuoğlu, Mustafa (2008-01-01)
In this article, performances of linear and quadratic hexahedral edge elements are compared in the context of electromagnetic scattering problems. The de-facto standard of 0.1 lambda element size for linear elements is taken as a basis; and 0.3 to 0.4 lambda-size quadratic element usage is proposed for a better accuracy level with dramatic reduction in computation time and 7 memory. The proposed scheme is applied to some well-known practical problems. (c) 2007 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
