Depending upon their chemical composition and, to a lesser extent, on their physical properties, iron oxide pellets exhibit varying degrees of sticking tendency during direct reduction at elevated temperatures. For an efficient shaft furnace operation in direct reduction (DR), it is imperative to prevent pellets from sticking to each other and, hence, forming clusters. Coating of pellets with a suitable inorganic material has increasingly been gaining recognition amongst the pellet producers and DR plant operators as an effective method of preventing sticking. In this study, the effect of coating on the sticking of DR-grade pellets with low and high basicity (Midrex and HyL quality pellets, respectively) was investigated. The results show that bauxite and serpentine alone, and limestone and bentonite in combination are suitable materials for the prevention of sticking of both types of pellets.

Surface characteristics and in-vitro behavior of chemically treated bulk Ti6Al7Nb alloys
ESEN, ZİYA; Ocal, Ezgi Butev (2017-01-15)
The effect of various treatments on surface chemical composition and structure, and bioactivity of Ti6Al7Nb bulk alloys has been investigated. The alloys were treated employing aqueous solutions of NaOH and CaCl2 separately, and also by subsequent CaCl2 treatment after NaOH treatment (NaOH-CaCl2 treatment) which were followed by heat treatment. NaOH treatment was observed to be effective in enrichment of surface layer with Na. On the other hand, Na+ ions were mostly replaced by Ca2+ ions as a result of NaOH...
Formation and characterization of infrared absorbing copper oxide surfaces
Arslan, Burcu; Erdogan, Metehan; Karakaya, İshak (2017-04-30)
Copper oxide formation has been investigated to combine the advantages of producing different size and shapes of coatings that possess good light absorbing properties. An aqueous blackening solution was investigated and optimum composition was found as 2.5 M NaOH and 0.225 M NaClO to form velvet copper oxide films. A two-step oxidation mechanism was proposed for the blackening process by carefully examining the experimental results. Formation of Cu2O was observed until the entire copper surface was covered ...
Flow induced polymer-filler interactions: Bound polymer properties and bound polymer-free polymer phase separation and subsequent phase inversion during mixing
Akay, G. (Wiley, 1990-11)
The irreversible absorption of macromolecules on to solid filler particles during mixing in the melt is investigated. The molecular weight and concentration dependence of the absorbed layer thickness are evaluated and the chemical and morphological nature of the irreversibly absorbed polymer (bound polymer) are determined. It is found that the thickness of the bound polymer is not only dependent on the filler concentration but also dependent on polymer molecular weight. Bound polymer in high density polyeth...
Exhast gas cleaning by three way catalytic converters
Karakoç Yıldız, Zuhal; Önal, Işık; Department of Chemical Engineering (2013)
In this study, powder catalysts slurries are washcoated on cordierite monoliths. CeO2-ZrO2 (CZO) and CeO2-ZrO2-Al2O3 (CZAO) mixed oxides are synthesized by co-precipitation. Pd and Rh metals are used as a nobel metals in these supports. Metal loaded CZO is mixed with gamma phase alumina. Powder catalysts are characterized by XRD, BET, ICP-MS and the monolithic catalysts are imaged by SEM. Catalytic activities of monolithic catalysts are tested in dynamic test system which is computerized and basically compo...
Non-fickian moisture absorption in polymers coated with a thin nanocomposite layer
Altan, Altan; Altan, M. Cengiz; Guloglu, GÖRKEM EĞEMEN; Güloğlu, Görkem Eğemen (2014-01-01)
Moisture absorption in polymers and polymeric composites is well known to lead to significant degradation in mechanical properties. Most epoxy based composites may absorb 2 to 5 wt.% moisture when they are subjected to humid environments. Moisture absorption in polymers has been often characterized with Fickian or various non-Fickian models to describe the time-dependent absorption phenomena. Previous experiments have shown that dispersing moderate amounts of nanoclay in an epoxy resin can: (i) reduce the t...
