In this study, buckling, post-buckling and progressive failure of composite laminated plates have been investigated numerically and experimentally. Buckling load, load-displacement relations for post buckling and maximum out-of-plane displacements of the plates are determined. Furthermore, the numerical results are compared with experimental findings for two different laminates made of woven fabric and uni-directional tapes. The comparisons show that there is a good agreement between numerical and experimental results obtained for buckling load and post-budding behavior especially for the laminates with uni-directional tapes.

Buckling, postbuckling and progressive failure anaylses of composite laminated plates under compressive loading
Namdar, Ömer; Darendeliler, Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2012)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate buckling, post-buckling behaviors and failure characteristics of composite laminated plates under compressive loading with the help of finite element method and experiments. In the finite element analyses, eigen value extraction method is used to determine the critical buckling loads and nonlinear Riks and Newton-Raphson methods are employed to obtain post-buckling behaviors and failure loads. The effects of geometric imperfection amplitude on buckling and post-buckl...
Stress analysis of symmetric aluminum composite-laminated beams under a bending moment: Materially nonlinear only
Sayman, O; Belevi, M; Altinhan, M (SAGE Publications, 2005-01-01)
In this study, an elastic-plastic stress analysis is carried out on symmetric laminated composite beams subjected to a bending moment. The composite beam is to be strain hardening. The Bernoulli and Euler hypotheses are assumed to be valid. The Tsai-Hill theory is used as a yield criterion in the solution. The solution is carried out for (90 degrees/0 degrees)(2), (30 degrees/-30 degrees)(2), (45 degrees/-45 degrees)(2), and (60 degrees/-60 degrees)(2) orientations. The bending moment is to be found the hig...
Shrinkage compensation approach proposed for ABS material in FDM process
Dilberoğlu, Mecid Uğur; Yaman, Ulaş (Informa UK Limited, 2019-03-25)
Dimensional accuracy of parts manufactured by Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) greatly suffers from the shrinkage problems of the available polymer materials. This paper proposes a constructive idea for resolving the shrinkage issues and explains how shrinkage could be managed by interior geometry of the artifacts fabricated on desktop 3D printers. The main principle for preventing the deterioration on dimensional accuracy of the holes/slots is to utilize the auxiliary lines located from the hole's perimete...
Frictionless double contact problem for an axisymmetric elastic layer between an elastic stamp and a flat support with a circular hole
Mert, Oya; Geçit, M. Ruşen; Department of Engineering Sciences (2011)
This study considers the elastostatic contact problem of a semi-infinite cylinder. The cylinder is compressed against a layer lying on a rigid foundation. There is a sharp-edged circular hole in the middle of the foundation. It is assumed that all the contacting surfaces are frictionless and only compressive normal tractions can be transmitted through the interfaces. The contact along interfaces of the elastic layer and the rigid foundation forms a circular area of which outer diameter is unknown. The probl...
Monitoring the Microstructural Evolution in Spheroidized Steels by Magnetic Barkhausen Noise Measurements
DAVUT, Kemal; Gür, Cemil Hakan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2010-12-01)
The aim of this study is to monitor nondestructively the degree of spheroidization in steels by Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN) method. Various series of specimens consisting of either lamellar pearlite or partially/completely spheroidized carbides were produced from AISI 1060 steel by appropriate heat treatments. All specimens were characterized by metallographic examinations, hardness and MBN measurements. The results show that MBN signals are very sensitive to the variations in the microstructure caused ...
