Authentic collaborative m-learning activities were designed, developed and implemented for a computer networking course. The effect of the activities on student engagement and motivation were analyzed using a mixed method research design. Moreover, the effect of the iterative design of the content and instructional process of authentic m-learning activities on students' engagement and motivation were analyzed in the study. The activities were implemented for two consecutive semesters and were modified based on the findings from the first semester. Student engagement survey and motivation questionnaire were used to collect quantitative data, student interview protocol was used to collect qualitative data for further investigation. The findings from the first semester indicated that the engagement categories "personal development" and "satisfaction from the course" had the highest mean scores. In the second semester, the highest mean score belonged to the "personal development" category, followed by "collaborative learning." Comparison of the results from two semesters revealed that the improvements in the content of the activities and instructional process increased the "collaboration" among students as well as their "interaction with instructor." Paired sample t-tests revealed a difference in indicators of student motivation within groups in both semesters. Analysis of the interview data showed that students perceived the authentic activities as an appropriate tool for enhancement in "communication" and "collaboration" opportunities.

The value of information in a manufacturing facility taking production and lead time quotation decisions
Kaman, Cumhur; Savaşaneril Tüfekci, Seçil; Department of Industrial Engineering (2011)
Advancements in information technology enabled to track real time data in a more accurate and precise way in many manufacturing facilities. However, before obtaining the more accurate and precise data, the investment in information technology should be validated. Value of information may be adopted as a criterion in this investment. In this study, we analyze the value of information in a manufacturing facility where production and lead time quotation decisions are taken. In order to assess the value of info...

It is known that instructional design principles are used for providing better learning in multimedia environments. E-reading can be thought as a part of multimedia learning and it has become more popular in society with the help of digital technologies. Nowadays, people mostly use handheld devices like tablets for reading and each of them has their own screen resolution. Thereof, online web content should provide ideal viewing for each screen size to support easy reading which is called responsive website ...
The visual perception of automobile seat comfort
Erol, Tuğra; Gürsu, Hakan; Department of Industrial Design (2006)
The visual domain design constitutes the general designers communication basis for communicating messages of product attributes. In the design of an automobile seat where mainly the accommodating functions remain constant, an automobile seat’s “style” affords the ability to provide certain meanings with affective connotations. Treating style aesthetics as a source of information, the communication of “comfort” can be provided via forms and other attributes. The literature provides strong evidence that comfo...
