This thesis analyzes the application of computer aided design tools and online collaboration environments in design education. The focus of this study is the utilization of online collaboration environments in design education in order to conduct an efficient and effective virtual design studio course. The requirements of design education and online collaboration environments will be identified and the coinciding and conflicting points will be discussed. The elements of design education; the concept generation phase of design process, peer learning in design studio and design juries will be evaluated with regard to the literature survey and the findings of the case study. The findings of the case study indicated that in concept generation phase of design process the number of concepts created was not less than a similar project in a traditional design studio and publishing students̕ works to public via a shared online environment motivated students in a positive way to participate in studio activities in a positive way.

Exploration of instructional design process and experience of novice instructional designers through the framework of activity theory : a case study in an instructional design course
Karakuş, Türkan; Çağıltay, Kürşat; Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology (2011)
Contextual issues have considerable role on learning outcomes of instructional design process. In this dissertation study, an instructional multimedia design and development course was explored to understand how contextual issues influence the experience and processes of Novice Instructional Designers’ (NIDs) activities in an instructional design project. The main participants of the study were 47 junior Computer Education and Instructional Technology students who were enrolled in the course. Besides, 26 st...
An assesment of an on-line course environment based on the perceptions of students and the instructor : a case study
Gürbüz, Tarkan; Yıldırım, İbrahim Soner; Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology (2004)
The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that contribute to online collaboration in a web-based course by investigating the impact and the potential of an online learning environment in terms of both the students' and instructor̕s perceptions about learner benefits, learner support, motivation, computer mediated communication, and group work. A mixed methods case study design was thought to be appropriate to match the purpose of the study, thus a combination of components normally found in descr...
A green touch for the future of distance education
Gündoğan, Mihraç Banu (Elsevier, 2012-5-01)
This paper aims to draw attention to the sustainability of distance learning in terms of the design process based on learner characteristics and technology usage. Distance learning has become a cyberized system owing its presence to developments in digital technologies. Technological developments solve some immediate problems but also have the risk of leading to even greater ones. To ‘sustain’ is not only about keeping up, supporting or maintaining continuity but also is about nourishing, cultivation and ac...

A Framework for Web-based Education Systems Supporting Interdisciplinary Design Collaboration
Karakaya, Ahmet Fatih ; Taşlı Pektaş, Şule (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2007-6-01)
Web-based educational systems are promising applications to enhance design education. Although the advantages of such systems have been discussed in the literature extensively, few studies in the field have used them for teaching interdisciplinary design collaboration. In order to alleviate this problem, a web-based interdisciplinary building design studio was designed and implemented. Considering the lack of systematic approaches in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in studios, th...
