Cycling as a way of transportation, has been associated with sustainable mobility all over the world. The new studies and the current debate have shown that achieving sustainable mobility in the current century, depends not just on the environmental health but also depends on the health of individuals and society and on the quality of environment on the local scale. Until 21st century, in the debate on sustainable mobility the main concern was about economic growth by providing efficient mobility of humans and goods. But, the new studies and developments have shown that the subjects of environmental and social impacts, health and inequality must be also emphasized. The concerns about the health of public and the pollution from motorized transport have increased the support on healthy and low-carbon form of mobility: cycling. Hence, countries all over the world, have been implementing policies which support cycling as an urban transport mode to improve sustainable mobility in their cities. This thesis focuses on the investigation into the necessary measures to achieve a successful sustainable mobility by using cycling as an urban transport mode. The study has analyzed bicycle transport within sustainable mobility measures among case study cities. The study is aimed to be a guide for bicycle transport planning. The scientific literature review and analysis of case study cities reveal the main findings to encourage cycling as an urban transport mode in terms of improving sustainable mobility. In this content, bicycle transportation in selected sample cities in Turkey has been investigated. The study is concluded with the inferences regarding case studies in terms of improving sustainable mobility to promote cycling.
