The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry is a well-known latecomer to the effectiveness proposed by embracing of Industry 4.0 technologies; while other sectors embrace digitization and Information Communication Technologies (ICT) as an innovative strategy for maintaining economic profit and efficiency. In spite of the potential benefits that proposed by Industry 4.0, this revolution was not able to gain enough attention in the construction industry. Therefore, this study took initial steps to assess the awareness of Turkish construction professionals towards the implementation of a full digitalization to the construction value chain using Industry 4.0 technologies, moreover, a strategic roadmap for implementing Industry 4.0 technologies and concepts in the construction industry which is consist of five phases is proposed. In order to gather data from Turkish construction industry experts, a questionnaire was prepared and distributed among them. According to the survey responded by Turkish construction professionals, although awareness on Industry 4.0 average is low, there are some technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM), Simulation Models/Tools, and Mobile Computing that the majority of respondents’ area aware of them. Moreover, consultants’’ awareness vi towards the smart factory cluster technologies is exceptionally high, while these technologies are neglected in the publications and practice. Turkish construction industry professional’s area aware that embracing these technologies can have a significant impact on improving decision making quality, and sustainability

Development of an IT-based tool for portfolio assessment and management for construction companies
Bilgin, Gözde; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Özorhon Orakçal, Beliz; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Development in the construction industry has leaded most of the construction companies to undertake more complex projects than before, which are generally executed concurrently. Therefore, project management routines of the companies may not support effective management of multi-projects. Project portfolio management approach has been suggested to meet requirements for coordinating multi-projects to meet strategic objectives under limited resources. Since project portfolio management requires a comprehensiv...
Investigating the relationship between the recent investments on construction sector and some economic indicators of Turkey
Aydın, Aykut; Özdemir, Özlem; Department of Business Administration (2016)
Construction industry is believed to constitute a significant part of the economic development and there are quite noteworthy studies that analyze the relationship between construction industry investments and economic development. This study attempts to find out this causal relationship by using Toda and Yamamoto Augmented VAR model for Granger Non-causality. In addition, two separate models are used in order to detect the effects of specific construction activities such as residential, commercial and indu...
Heuristic and exact methods for the large-scale discrete time-cost trade-off problems
Aminbakhsh, Saman; Sönmez, Rifat; Atan, S. Tankut; Department of Civil Engineering (2018)
Construction industry necessitates formulating impeccable plans by decision makers for securing optimal outcomes. Managers often face the challenge of compromising between diverse and usually conflicting objectives. Particularly, accurate decisions on the time and cost must be made in every construction project since project success is chiefly related to these objectives. This is realized by addressing the time-cost trade-off problem (TCTP) which is an optimization problem and its objective is to identify t...
A National IT Strategy for Turkish Construction Industry
Kumaş, Nihan; Nielsen, Yasemin; Department of Civil Engineering (2004)
In this thesis, a national information technology (IT) strategy applicable to Turkish construction industry for future implementation of IT is developed, advising guidance to current and future stakeholders but also researchers and decision makers to set the right priorities and pre-harmonization for IT in construction. Within this study, the present situation of the industry is discussed, so as to structure today̕s required industry abilities fulfilling tomorrow̕s demands and innovative IT solutions. Then,...
Attitude of Turkish and Middle Eastern architecture engineering construction (AEC) industry toward integrated project delivery (IPD) method
Sharefi Abadi, Ali; Akçamete Güngör, Aslı; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Some of the 21th century’s controversial issues in construction industry are inability in completing the projects in schedule or budget, insufficient architectural drawings (according to the owners), inadequacy in decreasing the waste, tremendous energy consumption of buildings and inefficiency in controlling carbon emissions from buildings. Nonetheless, adversarial relationships between participants are a fatal factor in any project’s success. Unfortunately, previous project delivery methods incapable of s...
