Investigation of a new, low-cost, safe and highly efficient water disinfection alternative to conventional methods has prime importance. This study aims to develop silver nanowire decorated glass fiber (AgNW-GF) filters for the removal of E. coli from water. This study is one of the first studies to fabricate a novel AgNW-GF filter and to investigate its use for point-of-use (POU) water disinfection. To this purpose, effect of flow rate, AgNW loading and influent E. coli concentration on the removal efficiency of E. coli and Ag release from AgNW-GF filters were investigated. In addition, effect of volume of filtrate on Ag release was also analyzed. Disk diffusion tests revealed that AgNW-GF filters having different AgNW loadings had antibacterial effects against E. coli at concentration range of 103 – 108 CFU/ml. In order to investigate optimal conditions at which AgNW-GF filters achieved the highest removal efficiencies, flow tests were conducted with different flow rates (1, 2.5, 5 ml/min), AgNW loadings (0.95, 4.8, 9.9 mg/g) and E. coli concentrations (103, 105, 108 CFU/ml). Optimal flow rate, AgNW loading and influent E. coli concentration were found out as 1 ml/min, 9.9 mg/g, and 103 CFU/ml, respectively. The highest removal efficiency was obtained as 2.12 log after two-stage serial filtration application applied under optimal conditions. The released Ag amounts were all below the limit value of 100 ppb for potable water. Under determined optimal conditions, AgNW-GF filter was found as a promising alternative for POU water disinfection method to be used in contaminated natural water (<103 CFU/ml). In order to achieve higher removal efficiencies for more contaminated water and improve POU water disinfection with AgNW-GF filters, low-voltage can be applied to the developed AgNW-GF POU disinfection system.

Determination of groundwater threshold values: a methodology applied to Gediz basin
Bulut, Onur Fatih; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2019)
Turkish bylaw on Protection of Groundwater against Pollution and Deterioration requires the establishment of groundwater thresholds in groundwater bodies. According to this regulation, water status, as good or not, is to be determined based on the chemical status. Indeed, in a EU Project entitled “Background Criteria for the Identification of Groundwater Thresholds-BRIDGE”, in an attempt to the implementation of Water Frame Directive, a methodological framework has been developed to determine threshold valu...
Optimal design and operation of land-treatment systems for petroleum hydrocarbons
Kivanc, S; Ünlü, Kahraman (1999-04-22)
Land treatment technology has been extensively used for the disposal of petroleum hydrocarbon containing wastes. Effective management of land treatment systems requires optimum design and operation of the system in order to achieve the fastest and most complete degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons without contamination of the environment. This paper describes a model that can be used for optimal design and operation of land treatment systems for petroleum hydrocarbon containing wastes. The model is compose...
Silver Nanowire/Chitosan Nanocomposite Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering with Enhanced Durability,
Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Aksoy, Eda Ayşe; Şenel, Sevda; Doğanay, Doğa (null; 2018-11-25)
We report on a successful scaffold based tissue engineering approach that aims to facilitate maximal cell seeding efficiency and subsequent cell proliferation using durable scaffolds with interconnected porosity with high surface area per volume and enhanced mechanical strength, durability. Among the biopolymers chitosan, which is a biodegradable, biocompatible cationic polysaccharide exerting bioactive properties (eg.antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, hemostatic immunostimulatory etc) provides several advan...
Silver nanoparticles-tragacanth gel as a green membrane for effective extraction and determination of capecitabine
Hajizadeh, Salahaddin; Farhadi, Khalil; Molaei, Rahim; Forough, Mehrdad (Wiley, 2020-07-01)
A novel eco-friendly and effective electromembrane extraction method combining high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection was developed for the enrichment and determination of capecitabine. Tragacanth-silver nanoparticles conjugated gel was prepared by dissolving the tragacanth powder in synthesized silver nanoparticles solution and was used as a green membrane in electromembrane extraction. The porosity and presence of silver nanoparticles in the gel were characterized by field emission scann...
