A Point-of-Use (POU) Water Disinfection: Silver Nanowire Decorated Glass Fiber Filters

2020-12-01
Investigation of a new, low-cost, safe and highly efficient water disinfection alternative to conventional methods has prime importance. This study aims to develop silver nanowire decorated glass fiber (AgNW-GF) filters for the removal of E. coli from water. This is the first study to fabricate a novel AgNW-GF filter and to investigate its use for point-of-use (POU) water disinfection. To this purpose, the effects of flow rate, AgNW loading and influent E. coli concentration on the removal efficiency of E. coli and Ag release from AgNW-GF filters were investigated. Effect of filtrate volume on Ag release was also analyzed. Disk diffusion tests revealed that AgNW-GF filters with different AgNW loadings had antibacterial effects against E. coli at a concentration range of 103 – 108 CFU/ml. Flow tests were conducted in order to investigate optimal conditions at which AgNW-GF filters achieved the highest E. coli removal efficiency. Optimal flow rate, AgNW loading and influent E. coli concentration were found out as 1 ml/min, 9.9 mg/g, and 103 CFU/ml, respectively. The highest removal efficiency was obtained as 2.12 log after two-stage serial filtration under optimal conditions. The released Ag amounts were all below the limit value of 100 ppb for potable water. Under determined optimal conditions, AgNW-GF filter was found as a promising alternative for POU water disinfection method to be used in contaminated natural water (<103 CFU/ml).

A SEMIANALYTICAL ANALYSIS OF COMPRESSIBLE ELECTROPHORETIC CAKE FORMATION
KAMBHAM, KKR; Tuncay, Kağan; CORAPCIOGLU, MY (American Geophysical Union (AGU), 1995-05-01)
Leaks in geomembrane liners of waste landfills and liquid impoundments cause chemical contaminants to leak into the subsurface environment. A mathematical model is presented to simulate electrophoretic sealing of impoundment leaks. The model describes the formation of a compressible clay cake because of electrical and gravitational forces. The model includes mass balance equations for the solid-particles and liquid phase, modified Darcy's law in an electrical field, and Terzaghi's definition of effective st...
A Laboratory Column Investigation for the Treatment of Cr(VI) with Zero-Valent Iron
Uyusur, Burcu; Ünlü, Kahraman (Mary Ann Liebert Inc, 2009-02-01)
Permeable reactive barrier (PRB) technology is commonly placed in the list of options for groundwater remediation at hazardous waste sites, where Cr(VI) treatment in groundwater has been a concern more than any other inorganic contaminants. The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and longevity of Cr(VI) removal with zero-valent iron based PRBs. The main focus was on two parameters affecting the performance of Cr(VI) removal with PRBs: (1) amount of reactive media and (2) groundwater...
Synthesis and surface modification of polyurethanes with chitosan for antibacterial properties
Kara, Filiz; AKSOY, EDA AYŞE; YÜKSEKDAĞ, ZEHRANUR; Hasırcı, Nesrin; AKSOY, SERPİL (2014-11-04)
Surface modification and providing antibacterial properties to the materials or devices are getting great attention especially in the last decades. In this study, polyurethane (PU) films were prepared by synthesizing them in medical purity from toluene diisocyanate and polypropylene ethylene glycol without using any other ingredients and then the film surfaces were modified by covalent immobilization of chitosan (CH) which has antibacterial activity. CH immobilized PU films (PU-CH) were found to be more hyd...
Ag nanostructures on a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) film prepared with electrochemical route: A controllable roughened SERS substrate with high repeatability and stability
Dogan, Uzeyir; KAYA, MURAT; CİHANER, ATİLLA; Volkan, Mürvet (2012-12-15)
A simple, reliable and reproducible one-step electrochemical method for the preparation of surface-enhanced Raman-active polymer-mediated silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on planar indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates was reported. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) film was used as a support material for dispersing nanostructured silver nanostructures on the surface homogeneously, since 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) monomer polymerizes regioregularly. The optical properties and morphologie...
