Land treatment technology has been extensively used for the disposal of petroleum hydrocarbon containing wastes. Effective management of land treatment systems requires optimum design and operation of the system in order to achieve the fastest and most complete degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons without contamination of the environment. This paper describes a model that can be used for optimal design and operation of land treatment systems for petroleum hydrocarbon containing wastes. The model is composed of system simulator and optimization submodels. Selected model applications are presented to demonstrate the applicability and utility of the model. Such model applications include determination of the optimal design and operation conditions for the land treatment of petroleum hydrocarbon containing wastes under various different site and soil environmental conditions and practical waste disposal scenarios.

The application of artificial neural networks for the prediction of water quality of polluted aquifer
Gumrah, F; Oz, B; Guler, B; Evin, S (2000-04-01)
From hydrocarbon reservoirs, beside of oil and natural gas, the brine is also produced as a waste material, which may be discharged at the surface or re-injected into the ground. When the wastewater is injected into the ground, it may be mixed with fresh water source due to to several reasons. Forecasting the pollutant concentrations by knowing the historical data at several locations on a field has a great importance to take the necessary precautions before the undesired situations are happened.
Impacts of Decreasing Recharge Rates on Sustainable Groundwater Management
Yazıcıgil, Hasan; Yılmaz, Koray Kamil (2010-09-04)
Groundwater is a vital resource for living and food security for at least two billion people worldwide. Ever increasing demand on groundwater has led to overexploitation of the aquifers and degradation of groundwater quality. Climate change will exacerbate these problems by producing reduced recharge rates in some areas, more reliance on groundwater resources due to decrease in reliability of surface waters, farther inland penetration of saltwater intrusion in response to both sea-level rise and excessive g...
A model for optimal operation of land-treatment sites for oily wastes
Ünlü, Kahraman (SAGE Publications, 2001-06-01)
Land treatment as a disposal technology has been extensively used for the disposal of oily wastes. Effective management of land treatment sites require optimal operation of the system in order to achieve the fastest and most complete degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons without contamination of the environment. This paper describes a model that can be used for optimising the operation of land treatment sites for oily wastes. The model is composed of system simulator and optimisation submodels. Conceptually...
Optimization of the aquifer remediation costs and design with pulsed pumping
Aksoy, Ayşegül (null; 1999-06-10)
(No paper) Pump-and-treat is a common technique for the remediation of contaminated aquifers. However, slow kinetic mass transfer at sites contaminated with organic compounds may reduce the efficiency of the pump-and-treat remediation. Although continuous pumping tends at first to remove high concentrations from an aquifer, it soon removes much lower concentrations due to slow mass transfer from immobile to mobile phases. Pulsed pumping, in which the pump is periodically turned off, has been suggested as a ...
Mathematical and computational modelling of chemical heat pumps
Güneş, Talha; Uludağ, Yusuf; Karakaş, Gürkan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2018)
Chemical heat pumps are valuable alternatives to conventional heat pumps when the aim is re-utilizing waste energy that is created from natural or industrial sources. In this study, kinetic data of an activated carbon – ethanol adsorption reactor is modeled and properly implemented into COMSOL Multiphysics software, and the geometry is modified for higher rate of heat transfer with the aim of gaining more performance from the system. On top of that, various cycle times are studied for gaining optimal coolin...
