Pipeline and storage network design problem is to design a pipeline network with its constituting arcs and their capacities to meet natural gas demands of the cities, while minimizing the total cost of the system. Storage nodes are included in the network structure to store the natural gas in cases of insufficient supply. Models for the deterministic and stochastic versions of the problem are designed. The deterministic model is solved with the Benders Decomposition method. Three different versions of Benders decomposition are used. For the stochastic model, two-stage stochastic programming is used. Computational experiments are performed on randomly generated problem instances. A case study for the Turkish pipeline system is also analyzed.

Natural gas consumption forecast with MARS and CMARS models for residential users
Ozmen, Ayse; Yilmaz, Yavuz; Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm (Elsevier BV, 2018-02-01)
Prediction natural gas consumption is indispensable for efficient system operation and required for planning decisions at natural gas Local Distribution Companies (LDCs). Residential users are major consumers that usually demand a significant amount of total gas supplied in distribution systems, especially, in the winter season. Natural gas is primarily used for space heating, and for cooking of food by residential users therefore, they should naturally be non-interruptible. Due to the fact that distributio...
Energy harvester design method to power wireless sensor nodes for in pipe monitoring applications
Qureshi, Fassahat Ullah; Muhtaroğlu, Ali; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2016-7)
A sensor network, used to monitor water, oil or gas pipelines, consists of a group of wireless sensor nodes (WSN) that are linked using a communication infrastructure. Traditional batteries are commonly used to power sensor nodes, but they have limited lifetime and require regular maintenance. Thus, their utility is limited in locations that are difficult to access, such as underwater pipelines. Therefore, using an energy harvester to power the sensor node becomes a desirable option. A method for near-...
Fuzzy Multiobjective Decision Making Approach for Groundwater Resources Management
Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin (2007-01-01)
A conventional simulation-optimization model with constraint on drawdown at an area of interest is used to optimize additional groundwater withdrawal at multiple demand locations in a coastal aquifer. After obtaining the optimal solution, a decision-making analysis is conducted using fuzzy logic concepts. The goal is to evaluate multiple objectives and select the best management strategy. This methodology is applied to a hypothetical case consisting of six groundwater demand locations in Savannah, Ga. The o...
Kalman-filter-based observer design around optimal control policy for gas pipelines
Durgut, I; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal (1997-01-30)
Seeking the optimal operating policy by an off-line controller for pipelines carrying natural gas has an inherent state estimation problem associated with deviations from demand forecast. This paper presents a Kalman-filter-based observer for the real-time estimation of deviations from the states previously obtained by an off-line controller optimally, around an expected demand function. The observer is based on the linearized form of the non-linear partial differential equations which are the state space r...
City logistics system design under cost uncertainty
Kunter, Utku Can; İyigün, Cem; Süral, Haldun; Department of Industrial Engineering (2015)
City Logistics (CL) is a quickly developing area of research aiming to develop the methods for designing efficient and effective freight distribution networks. We make an extensive review on CL as well as studies related to CL in order to describe the position of CL in the literature. Based on this review, the location and allocation decisions in a CL system under transportation cost uncertainty is analyzed from a strategic point of view. We use Value of Information analysis to compare different formulation...
