Apparently, construction industry has one of the highest work accident rates in the World. While construction industry has many sub branches, each and every one of themhasitsowndistinctives. Thesevarietyofprojectsbringspecialtypesofhazards and hazard sources together. Tunnel construction is a very specific area to work on and creating a safe working environment especially for the underground projects is a challenging task. While confined space works carry different kind of risks, management should be more attractive to create risk mitigation strategies when it is compared with other construction projects. As long as every project has a due date, operations must be completed within a proper time and source management. Risks and hazard sources must be determined. But even the risks and hazard sources are determined and classified, the main objective should be the prioritization of those risks, so decision makers can give required attention for every project risk. While there is limited sources, it is essential to spend them systematically. This study aims to make a systematic approach to risk prioritisation for tunnel projects. Tunnel construciton projects are complex environments and that is why Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) used for the decision making and prioritisation of the risks. In addition to that, interviews have been fulfilled with the tunnel construction experts and derived risk scores for especially on Marmaray Project tunnel construction risks. In the end the risk prioritisation list is created. To sum up, scrutinizing and combining AHP with experts comments before and during the site executions of tunnel projects can help to create a safe working environment, give enough attention for different risks and using the project sources properly.

Unique and complex nature of the construction industry brings a high number of injuries in construction sites. Although the importance given to the health and safety practices increased recently, still there exists inadequacy of preventative practices along with poor risk management policies. One of the reasons that cause a high incidence of injuries is inability to identify scenarios that create injuries effectively, which in turn makes finding optimal risk mitigation strategies difficult. So, the objectiv...
An Experimental study on the pool fire burning characteristics of n-heptane and ethanol in the tunnels
Yamalı, Tevfik Uluç; Yozgatlıgil, Ahmet; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2015)
The road and railway tunnel disasters in recent decades drew the attention of fire safety engineers. The effects of mechanical ventilation, tunnel geometry, physical and chemical properties of fuel on fire characteristics such as heat release rate, smoke temperature distributions along the tunnel and burning rate are experimentally examined on full scaled, large scaled and reduced scaled tunnel models. Although there are many studies on the effects of conventional fuels like gasoline and diesel, the blended...
Contemporary Issues in Mega Construction Projects

Mega construction projects have been receiving increased attention of construction management researchers in recent years. Management of mega construction projects has special challenges when compared with other types of projects not only because of their large size, long duration, and high societal and environmental impacts, but also due to their vulnerabilities stemming from high number of stakeholders involved, contractual and technical complexity, and exposure to changes in macro environmental condition...
Assessment and management of roof fall risks in underground coal mines
Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem; Einstein, HH (Elsevier BV, 2004-01-01)
Accidents caused by roof falls are commonly faced problems of underground coal mines. These accidents may have detrimental effects on workers in the form of injury, disability or fatality as well as mining company due to downtimes, interruptions in the mining operations, equipment breakdowns, etc. This study proposes a risk and decision analysis methodology for the assessment and management of risk associated with mine roof falls in underground coal mines. In the proposed methodology, risk assessment requir...
Lean Design Management – An Evaluation of Waste Items for Architectural Design Process
Mazlum, Salih Kaan; Pekeriçli, Mehmet Koray (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2016-01-01)
Inefficiency stands as a major problem in construction industry. Lean thinking is a relatively new process improvement philosophy which approaches inefficiency by reducing the waste. Although the inefficiency of design stages has been associated with the poor results of construction projects, less attention has been paid on the relationship between lean thinking and architectural design process. While there is a strong potential for improvement in the design processes via application of lean thinking, an an...
