The main concern of the study is to propose lime-based straw-mixed mortars with pozzolanic additives to be used as qualified building materials, particularly for sound and thermal insulation purposes and to assess theirperformance properties in this regard. Compositional properties of a specific type of traditional exterior plaster wereinspiring for the production of porous lime-based straw-mixed mortar samples with high thermal resistivity and sound absorption properties. Several mortar mixtures, mainly composed of limeas binder, wheat straw fibers as aggregate and metakaolinas the pozzolanic additive, were prepared in various “binder:pozzolanic additive:straw” ratios.Comprehensive laboratory analyses were conducted on those newly-produced samples to determine their performance properties. The lowest bulk density and thermal conductivity and the highest porosity and sound absorption characteristics were achieved at the straw-mixed samples with the binder:straw ratio of 3:1. The L3W1 and LM3W1 samples have low but still enough flexural and compressive strengthwhile LM3W1 is stiffer than L3W1.The sample L3W1 with weighted sound absorption coefficient ({u1D6FC}{u1D464})value of 0.40 has higher sound absorption than the sample LM3W1 while the sample LM3W1 with thermal conductivity (λ)value of 0.06 W/mK is more thermal resistive than the sample L3W1. Since stiffness and strength characteristics are crucial for building materials, further analyses can be performed toprepare lime-based straw-mixed pozzolanic (LMW) mixtures with a higher content of straw for the development of more thermal resistive and sound absorptive materials coated with protective and breathable plasters having higher water impermeability.

Application of TS 825 Turkish thermal insulation standard using BIM
Altun, Murat; Akçamete Güngör, Aslı (2019-04-17)
Thermal insulation offers an efficient passive solution to provide energy savings in the buildings. In Turkey, TS825 “Thermal Insulation Requirements for Buildings” standard regulates the thermal performance of the buildings. In current practice, the energy requirement of a building is calculated manually according to geometric data andthermal properties of the elements on the building envelope. Geometric data is extracted from 2D drawings, whereas materials forming the layers of the exterior building element...
Thermal Performance of Buildings with Passive Solar Gains, Insulation and Energy Efficient Heating Systems
Çakmaklı, Ayşem Berrin; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Pedergnana, Matthieu; Farzin Moghaddam, Maryam; Deljavan, Nastaran; Aslan, Ece(2014-12-31)
This project proposal builds on previous research by the project team to demonstrate how energy efficiency in buildings can be significantly increased all year round by combining passive solar heating, appropriate building materials, and adequate insulation with efficient heating techniques such as the rocket stove. Design and production of solar units and energy efficient rocket stoves will be followed by monitoring of the thermal performance and energy consumption of selected spaces. Results will indicat...
Development of silica fume-based geopolymer foams
Shakouri, Sahra; Bayer, Özgür; Erdoğan, Sinan Turhan (Elsevier BV, 2020-11-01)
Thermal insulation materials are critical for reducing the energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with buildings. A good insulation material must not only have low density and sufficient mechanical properties but also resist high temperatures and fires. In addition, its production process must be simple and inexpensive. This study describes the production of very low density (>85 kg/m(3)) inorganic foams with high porosity (<94%). Silica fume and NaOH solutions are mixed to prepare a geopolymer ...
Seismic Performance Assessment of Masonry Buildings Using In Situ Material Properties
Cobanoglu, Baran; ALDEMİR, ALPER; Demirel, Ismail Ozan; Binici, Barış; Canbay, Erdem; Yakut, Ahmet (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2017-08-01)
Seismic performance assessment of existing buildings requires the existing material's properties to be determined as this has a significant influence on the seismic risk. As one of the most common construction type in Turkey, masonry buildings are assessed generally based on the recommended material properties specified in relevant codes as opposed to testing of samples taken from the existing buildings. However, due to different material types and workmanship quality, the specified properties might be quit...
Experimental investigation of phase change materials used in prototype military shelters
Erkal, Zafer; Tarı, İlker; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2011)
In this thesis, the possible usage of phase change materials in military shelters with the aim of decreasing the heating effect of the solar radiation is presented. In order to meet the rapidly growing demand for energy in military applications, a passive cooling technique, specifically, storing thermal energy with phase change materials is analyzed by using experimental approach. Not only different types of phase change materials but also different amounts of them are examined during the solar loading expe...
