Performance assessment of lime-pozzolan mortars with straw aggregate for sound and thermal insulation purposes

The main concern of the study is to propose lime-based straw-mixed mortars with pozzolanic additives to be used as qualified building materials,particularly for sound and thermal insulation purposes and to assess theirperformance properties in this regard. Compositional properties of a specific type of traditional exterior plaster wereinspiring for the production of porous lime-based straw-mixed mortar samples with high thermal resistivity and sound absorption properties. Several mortar mixtures,mainly composed of limeas binder, wheat straw fibers as aggregate and metakaolinas the pozzolanic additive,were prepared in various “binder:pozzolanic additive:straw” ratios.Comprehensive laboratory analyses were conducted on those newly-produced samples to determine their performance properties.The lowest bulk density and thermal conductivity and the highest porosity and sound absorption characteristics were achieved at the straw-mixed samples with the binder:straw ratio of 3:1. The L3W1 and LM3W1 samples have low but still enough flexural and compressive strengthwhile LM3W1 is stiffer than L3W1.The sample L3W1 with weighted sound absorption coefficient ({u1D6FC}{u1D464})value of 0.40 has higher sound absorption than the sample LM3W1 while the sample LM3W1 with thermal conductivity (λ)value of 0.06 W/mK is more thermal resistive than the sample L3W1. Since stiffness and strength characteristics are crucial for building materials,further analyses can be performed toprepare lime-based straw-mixed pozzolanic (LMW) mixtures with a higher content of straw for the development of more thermal resistive and sound absorptive materials coated with protective and breathable plasters having higher water impermeability.
