This project proposal builds on previous research by the project team to demonstrate how energy efficiency in buildings can be significantly increased all year round by combining passive solar heating, appropriate building materials, and adequate insulation with efficient heating techniques such as the rocket stove. Design and production of solar units and energy efficient rocket stoves will be followed by monitoring of the thermal performance and energy consumption of selected spaces. Results will indicate solutions that will provide high levels of thermal comfort and favour sustainable rural development. If village life can be made more attractive by providing higher village living standards there could be a decrease in migration from the rural to the urban areas.

Application of TS 825 Turkish thermal insulation standard using BIM
Altun, Murat; Akçamete Güngör, Aslı (2019-04-17)
Thermal insulation offers an efficient passive solution to provide energy savings in the buildings. In Turkey, TS825 “Thermal Insulation Requirements for Buildings” standard regulates the thermal performance of the buildings. In current practice, the energy requirement of a building is calculated manually according to geometric data andthermal properties of the elements on the building envelope. Geometric data is extracted from 2D drawings, whereas materials forming the layers of the exterior building element...
Proposal of a Novel Gravity-Fed, Particle-Filled Solar Receiver
JOHNSON, Evan; Baker, Derek Keıth; Tarı, İlker (2016-10-14)
Solar Thermal Electricity power plants utilizing solid particles as heat transfer and storage media have been proposed by several research groups, with studies citing benefits of increased thermal efficiency and lower cost. Several types of solid particle receivers have been proposed, with leading designs consisting of particles falling or suspended in air. A new solid particle receiver is proposed here, consisting of a receiver fully packed with particles flowing downward with gravity. Particle flow rate i...
Numerical methodology for feasibility analysis of ground source heat pumps
Gamage, Kumudu Janani; Uzgören, Eray; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2014-8)
Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems provide an alternative energy source for residential and commercial space heating and cooling applications by utilizing the favorable temperature profile at a certain depth under the ground surface. GSHP’s aftereffects on the ground temperature profile need to be considered for estimating the economical breakeven point. The present study develops a new semi-analytical model to analyze the short term response of the ground heat exchangers by accounting the depth depende...
Optimizing the orientation of solar photovoltaic systems considering the effects of irradiation and cell temperature models with dust accumulation
Al-Ghussain, Loiy; Taylan, Onur; Abujubbeh, Mohammad; Hassan, Muhammed A. (2023-01-01)
To cope with the growing installation capacities of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in desert areas, it is necessary to revisit the energy production models and the optimal angles of PV panels given the significant impacts of ambient temperature, wind speed, dust accumulation, and cleaning frequency. In this study, these four factors are examined for four PV technologies (polycrystalline, microcrystalline, monocrystalline, and thin-film) at three cities in Jordan, Egypt, and Tunisia using precise ground-lev...
Sustainable impact evaluation of energy retrofits for school buildings in different climate regions
Uluçay, Jülide Arzu; Pekeriçli, Mehmet Koray; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2019)
Due to increasing importance of the concepts of energy efficiency and sustainability, retrofits for a large portion of existing buildings have become an immediate necessity. In this respect, different retrofit strategies are employed for increasing the efficiency of existing building envelopes, energy sources, electrical and mechanical systems. Among the existing building types for efficiency retrofit are the school buildings, which differ from the rest due to their special function - education. The activit...
