In this study, fatigue failure behavior of welded X70 pipeline steel was investigated by rotating bar bending fatigue tests performed at room temperature. S-N curves of base metal, weld and heat-affected zone (HAZ) were plotted. Tension tests, hardness measurements and Charpy V notched impact tests were carried out for mechanical characterization. Microstructural examination was conducted by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Fracture surfaces were examined with SEM. In addition to fractographic analysis, striation spacing was used to estimate the crack growth rate of base metal, weld and HAZ. Stress intensity factor (∆K) ranges were also calculated. Tensile properties and hardness values of base metal and weld were found to be almost the same. Charpy impact test results show that base material has approximately twice impact energy than weld and HAZ at room temperature. However, Charpy impact energies of HAZ and weld decreased noticeably at −30 ℃ while very slight decrease was observed for base metal. The comparison of high cycle fatigue and crack growth behaviors shows that base metal has a better fatigue behavior than weld and HAZ from the point of crack initiation and propagation. Moreover, our findings also support the idea that striation spacing can be used as a fractographic approach in order to estimate the crack growth behavior of materials.

Mechanical, electrochemical and biocompatibility evaluation of AZ91D magnesium alloy as a biomaterial
Tahmasebifar, Aydin; KAYHAN, Said Murat; Evis, Zafer; Tezcaner, Ayşen; Cinici, Hanifi; Koc, Muammer (2016-12-05)
In this study, the effect of manufacturing conditions (i.e. compaction pressure, sintering temperature and time) on physical, mechanical and electrochemical properties of Mg alloy discs were investigated. The main motivation of this study was to achieve the manufacturing of porous and micro-surface textured Mg-based biomedical implants with good mechanical and electrochemical properties. A Box-Behnken and Full Factorial experimental design was used in experimental investigations. Relative densities of the f...
Crack propagation in a commercial steel
Bilir , Oğuz Gürkan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1988-5)
In this work, the fatigue crack propagation behaviour of commercial steel sheet specimens containing a circular hole, under uniaxial loading conditions at room temperature was investigated. The experimental data have been analysed in terms of variability of material constants. The results were presented in the form of power relationship between the crack growth rate and the stress intensity factor range.
Vibration Fatigue Analysis of a Cantilever Beam Using Different Fatigue Theories
Eldoğan, Yusuf; Ciğeroğlu, Ender (2014-02-11)
In this study, vibration fatigue analysis of a cantilever beam is performed using an in-house numerical code. Finite element model (FEM) of the cantilever beam verified by tests is used for the analysis. Several vibration fatigue theories are used to obtain fatigue life of the cantilever beam for white noise random input and the results obtained are compared with each other. Fatigue life calculations are repeated for different damping ratios and the effect of damping ratio is studied. Moreover, using strain...
Fatigue crack growth behaviour of AA6013 aluminum alloy at different aging conditions
Varlı, Aziz Egemen; Gürbüz, Rıza; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2006)
The effect of different aging treatments on fatigue crack growth behavior of AA6013 aluminum alloy was investigated. C(T) (Compact Tension) specimens were prepared in L-T and T-L direction for fatigue crack growth tests. Samples were in T651 as received, T42 which is solution heat treated at 538 ºC for 90 minutes, water quenched and aged in room temperature for 96 hours, and one group of samples were overaged at 245 ºC for 12 hours after T42 condition was achieved. Hardness and conductivity measurements wer...
