In this study, fatigue failure behavior of welded X70 pipeline steel was investigated by rotating bar bending fatigue tests performed at room temperature. S-N curves of base metal, weld and heat-affected zone (HAZ) were plotted. Tension tests, hardness measurements and Charpy V notched impact tests were carried out for mechanical characterization. Microstructural examination was conducted by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Fracture surfaces were examined with SEM. In addition to fractographic analysis, striation spacing was used to estimate the crack growth rate of base metal, weld and HAZ. Stress intensity factor (∆K) ranges were also calculated. Tensile properties and hardness values of base metal and weld were found to be almost the same. Charpy impact test results show that base material has approximately twice impact energy than weld and HAZ at room temperature. However, Charpy impact energies of HAZ and weld decreased noticeably at −30 ℃ while very slight decrease was observed for base metal. The comparison of high cycle fatigue and crack growth behaviors shows that base metal has a better fatigue behavior than weld and HAZ from the point of crack initiation and propagation. Moreover, our findings also support the idea that striation spacing can be used as a fractographic approach in order to estimate the crack growth behavior of materials.

Fatigue Behavior of Welded API 5L X70 Steel Used in Pipelines
Turhan, Sermin Ozlem; Motameni, Ali; Gürbüz, Rıza (2020-08-01)

Delamination of layered materials under impact loading
Dinç, Dinçer; Kalkanlı, Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2003)
In this study, a cold worked tool steel and a low carbon steel ( St 37 ), which were joined by brazing, were subjected to impact and shear loading. The end product is used as paper cutting blades in the industry. Effects of different brazing filler metals on the delamination of the blades under impact loading and on the impact toughness of the blades were studied. The target is to achieve higher impact toughness values without delamination. Impact toughness of the steels, joined by Cu, CuNi and BNi brazing ...
Mechanical, electrochemical and biocompatibility evaluation of AZ91D magnesium alloy as a biomaterial
Tahmasebifar, Aydin; KAYHAN, Said Murat; Evis, Zafer; Tezcaner, Ayşen; Cinici, Hanifi; Koc, Muammer (2016-12-05)
In this study, the effect of manufacturing conditions (i.e. compaction pressure, sintering temperature and time) on physical, mechanical and electrochemical properties of Mg alloy discs were investigated. The main motivation of this study was to achieve the manufacturing of porous and micro-surface textured Mg-based biomedical implants with good mechanical and electrochemical properties. A Box-Behnken and Full Factorial experimental design was used in experimental investigations. Relative densities of the f...
Thin section high cooling rate solidification, thermomechanical processing and characterization of AISI DC53 cold work tool steel
Çardaklı, İsmail Seçkin; Kalkanlı, Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2019)
In this study, firstly, the solidification behaviour of AISI DC53 cold work tool steel was investigated by means of a cooling curve and its first derivative. Copper and sand wedge-shaped moulds were used to obtain various solidification rates. To reveal the cooling rate degree during solidification, the secondary dendrite arm spacing of the steel alloy was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The solidification rates of each section for both wedge steel samples were calculated by means of the sec...
Replaceable links with direct brace attachments for eccentrically braced frames
Bozkurt, Mehmet Bakir; Topkaya, Cem (2017-10-25)
This paper reports findings of an experimental study conducted on replaceable links for steel eccentrically braced frames (EBFs). A replaceable link detail which is based on splicing the directly connected braces and the beam outside the link is proposed. This detail eliminates the need to use hydraulic jacks and flame cutting operations for replacement purposes. Performance of this proposed replaceable link was studied by conducting eight nearly full-scale EBF tests under quasi-static cyclic loading. The l...
