Examining in-service English language teachers’ professional needs : towards an online teacher training program

This study aimed to investigate the professional development needs of in-service English language teachers working at schools of the Ministry of National Education. The participants of the study were EFL teachers working in 26 different cities of Turkey at elementary, middle and high school levels. The main research foci of the study are: (1) analyzing the professional development needs of English language teachers, (2) designing an online in-service teacher training program based on the needs analysis and, (3) identifying if there are any significant differences between different groups of participants and their needs. The study followed a mixed method research design. By making used of quantitative and qualitative data collection tools, the study employed explanatory sequential design. The data collection tools were an online questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The questionnaire was administered to 322 participants and was utilized to determine the needs of EFL teachers. Subsequently, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 voluntary participants to triangulate and explain the questionnaire results. The data analysis procedures involved descriptive and inferential statistics for quantitative data, and coding and categorizing procedures for qualitative data. The results of the study revealed insights about EFL teachers’ In-service training needs, beliefs and preferences. The findings obtained from the questionnaire and the interview were utilized to suggest an outline for online in-service training program for EFL teachers in Turkey. The results of the study can be used to design and plan online professional development activities for EFL teachers.
