Here we report the synthesis of a monomer, 4-(2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)benzenamine (SNS-NH2) produced by the reaction of 1,4-di(2-thienyl)-1,4-butanedione and benzene-1,4-diamine. This monomer was electrochemically polymerized in the presence of LiClO4, NaClO4 (1:1) as the supporting electrolyte in acetonitrile. Copolymerization in the presence of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) was achieved in acetonitrile NaClO4/LiClO4 (0.1 M:0.1 M) solvent-electrolyte couple. Resulting homopolyrner and copolymer were characterized by means of cyclic voltammetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Spectroelectrochemistry analysis of homopolymer, P(SNS-NH2), reflected electronic transitions at 376 and 650 nm indicating pi-pi* transition and polaron band formation, respectively. The polymer has an electronic bandgap of 2.12 eV with a yellow color in the fully reduced form and a blue color in the fully oxidized form. Switching ability of the homopolymer was evaluated by kinetic studies upon measuring the %T as 20.7% at the maximum contrast point. Copolymer revealed multichromic property with five different colors at different applied potentials. Colorimetry studies for P(SNS-NH2-co-EDOT) proved that it is possible to provide fine tuning of these colors by varying applied potential during synthesis. Dual-type complementary colored electrochromic devices (ECD) using P(SNS-NH2-co-EDOT)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) in sandwich configuration were constructed. Spectroelectrochemistry, switching ability and optical memory of the electrochromic devices were investigated. (c) 2067 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Synthesis and characterization of a bifunctional amido-thiophene monomer and its copolymer with thiophene and electrochemical properties
AK, M; Çırpan, Ali; Yılmaz, Fatih; YAGCI, Y; Toppare, Levent Kamil (2005-05-01)
A bifunctional amido-thiophene namely hexamethylene (bis-3-thiophene acetamide) (HMTA) was synthesized by the reaction of 3-thiophene acetic acid with hexamethylene diamine. Copolymerization in the presence of thiophene was achieved electrochemically in tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate/acetonitrile (TBAFB/AN). Spectroelectro-chemical analysis of the resulting copolymer [P(HMTA-co-Th)] reflected electronic transitions at 505 nm, 740 nm and similar to 1000 nm, revealing pi to pi* transition, polaron and b...
A soluble conducting polymer: 1-Phenyl-2,5-di(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrrole and its electrochromic application
Tarkuc, S.; Sahmetlioglu, E.; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Akhmedov, I. M.; Toppare, Levent Kamil (2006-07-28)
A thiophene-functionalized monomer 1-phenyl-2,5-di(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrrole (PTP) was synthesized. The chemical polymerization of PTP (CPTP) was realized by using FeCl3 as the oxidant. The structures of both the monomer and the soluble polymer (CPTP) were investigated by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (H-1 and C-13 NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The average molecular weight of the chemically synthesized polymer was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as Mn = 7.2 x 10(3). The electrochemi...
A novel multielectrochromic copolymer based on 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-2,5-di(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrrole and EDOT
Varis, Serhat; Ak, Metin; Akhmedov, Iris M.; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Toppare, Levent Kamil (2007-05-01)
Copolymer of 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-2,5-di(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrrole (NTP) with 3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene (EDOT) was electrochemically synthesized and characterized. Resulting copolymer film has distinct electrochromic properties. It has five different colors (light red, red, light grey, green, and blue). At the neutral state lambda(max) x value due to the pi-pi* transition was found to be 550 nm and E-g was calculated as 1.6 eV. Double potential step chronoamperometry experiment shows that copolymer film has good...
Synthesis and characterization of thiophen-3-yl-acetic acid 4-pyrrol-1-yl-phenyl ester and its conducting polymers
Bingöl, Bahar; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2003)
Thiophen-3-yl acetic acid 4-pyrrol-1-yl phenyl ester (TAPE) monomer was synthesized by the reaction of thiophene acetic acid with thionyl chloride, and further reaction of thiophen-3-yl-acetyl chloride with 4-pyrrol-1-yl phenol. Electrochemical behavior of this monomer (TAPE) was determined by cyclic voltammetry. Homopolymers were achieved both by using electrochemical and chemical polymerization techniques. Copolymers of TAPE in the presence of bithiophene and pyrrole were synthesized by potentiostatic ele...
Conducting graft copolymers of pyrrole and thiophene with random copolymers of methyl methacrylate and 3-methylthienyl methacrylate
Guner, Y; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Hepuzer, Y; Yagci, Y (2004-08-01)
Random copolymers of 3-methyl thienylmethacrylate and methyl methacrylate were synthesized via free radical polymerization. Electro-copolymerizations of random copolymers with thiophene and/or pyrrole were carried out in acetonitrile-tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAFB), water-p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) solvent-electrolyte couples. Oxidative polymerization of thiophene functionalized random copolymer was also achieved by constant current electrolysis and chemical polymerization. The characteriza...
