Mathematical modeling and its role in mathematics education have been receiving increasing attention in Turkey, as in many other countries. The growing body of literature on this topic reveals a variety of approaches to mathematical modeling and related concepts, along with differing perspectives on the use of mathematical modeling in teaching and learning mathematics in terms of definitions of models and modeling, the theoretical backgrounds of modeling, and the nature of questions used in teaching modeling. This study focuses on two issues. The first section attempts to develop a unified perspective about mathematical modeling. The second section analyzes and discusses two approaches to the use of modeling in mathematics education, namely modeling as a means of teaching mathematics and modeling as an aim of teaching mathematics.

The development of a self-efficacy scale for mathematical modeling competencies
KOYUNCU, İLHAN; Guzeller, Cem Oktay; Akyüz, Didem (2017-01-01)
Mathematical modeling has come into prominence during the last few decades in many countries' mathematics teaching curricula. It combines real life situations with mathematical context. Although evaluating students' mathematical modeling performances with a unique Likert type instrument is questionable, having an instrument about their self-efficacy beliefs in mathematical modeling may help to comment about their ideas related to their competencies in mathematical modeling. The purpose of this study is to d...
DOCTORAL PROGRAMS IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION: CURRENT STATUS AND FUTURE PATHWAYS FOR TURKEY
Ubuz, Behiye; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat (2011-02-13)
The purpose of this paper is to review the current state of doctoral programs in mathematics education in three Turkish universities. In this context, we first provide brief background information about Turkish higher education system and teacher education policies in Turkey. Then the major national initiatives towards future faculty development efforts are explained. Finally, the nature and components of mathematics education doctoral programs in Turkey is provided. In doing so, we provide information abou...
ANALYSIS OF GEOMETRICAL OBJECTS TASKS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEXTBOOKS WITH PISA 2018 MATHEMATICS LITERACY FRAMEWORK
Topuz, Zehra Betül; Ubuz, Behiye; Department of Mathematics Education (2022-6-17)
The purpose of this study was to show to what extent middle school mathematics textbooks in Turkey include potential requirements of mathematics literacy for geometrical objects subject tasks in the PISA 2018 Mathematics Literacy Framework. Mathematics Literacy Framework includes four aspects: process, capabilities, contextualization, and proficiency levels. In total 220 tasks were coded. Regarding the process aspect, 88.1% of the tasks was about employing mathematical concepts, facts, and procedures, 7.8% ...
Nonlocal symmetries and integrable ordinary differential equations: xuml+3xx center dot+x(3)=0 and its generalizations
Karasu, Emine Ayşe (AIP Publishing, 2009-07-01)
The equation xuml+3xx center dot+x(3)=0 is well known in many areas of mathematics and physics. It possesses the algebra sl(3,R) of Lie point symmetries, hence is equivalent to the equation for a free particle, and both left and right Painleveacute series. We investigate two higher-dimensional analogs in terms of their symmetry and singularity structures. We find a drastic reduction in symmetry and a loss of some of the singularity properties. From the nonlocal symmetries we are able to determine the comple...
