Vulnerability of Turkish low-rise and mid-rise reinforced concrete frame structures

2008-01-01
In this study, seismic safety of low-rise and mid-rise structures, which constitute approximately 75% of the total building stock in Turkey, is investigated by generating fragility curves. The scope is 3, 5, 7, and 9-story reinforced concrete moment resisting frame structures. The uncertainties in material variability and the specific characteristics of construction practice in Turkey are taken into account in the formation of structural simulations. Two-dimensional analytical models are constructed accordingly and categorized as poor, typical, or superior corresponding to the observed seismic performance of structures after major earthquakes in Turkey. The seismic demand statistics in terms of maximum interstory drift ratio are obtained for different sets of ground motion records by performing nonlinear time history analyses. The capacity is determined in terms of limit states and the corresponding fragility curves are obtained from the probability of reaching or exceeding each limit state for different levels of ground shaking. The generated fragility curves are employed in a preliminary evaluation application. For this purpose, Fatih, a highly populated earthquake-prone district in Istanbul, is selected. This study attempts to be a benchmark for future fragility based studies on earthquake damage and loss estimation in urban areas of Turkey.

Effect of out-of-plane behavior on seismic fragility of masonry buildings in Turkey
Ceran, Hasan Burak; Erberik, Murat Altuğ (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-10-01)
This study focuses on the evaluation of seismic safety of unreinforced masonry buildings in Turkey by using fragility curves generated for two behavior modes of load bearing walls: in-plane and out-of-plane. During generation of fragility curves, a force-based approach has been used. There exist two limit states in terms of base shear strength for in-plane behavior mode and flexural strength for out-of-plane behavior mode. To assess the seismic vulnerability of unreinforced masonry buildings in Turkey, frag...
Fragility based assessment of lowrise and midrise reinforced concrete frame buildings in turkey using Düzce damage database
Özün, Ahsen; Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
In this study, the seismic fragility assessment of low-rise and mid-rise reinforced concrete frame buildings which constitute approximately 75 % of the total building stock in Turkey is investigated to quantify the earthquake risk. The inventory used in this study is selected from Düzce damage database which was compiled after the devastating 1999 earthquakes in the Marmara region. These buildings are not designed according to the current code regulations and the supervision in the construction phase is not...
Development of Fragility Curves for Single-Column RC Italian Bridges Using Nonlinear Static Analysis
Perdomo, Camilo; Monteiro, Ricardo; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Informa UK Limited, 2020-05-07)
The main objective of this study is to assess the accuracy and suitability of Nonlinear Static Procedures (NSPs) in the development of analytical damage fragility curves for seismic risk assessment of large portfolios of Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridges. Seven NSP approaches, from widely used single-mode conventional pushover-based approaches to the more rigorous multi-mode conventional or adaptive pushover-based procedures are implemented. By systematically comparing fragility curve estimations in terms of...
Probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of Eastern Marmara Region
Gülerce, Zeynep (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-10-01)
The objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic hazard in Eastern Marmara Region using an improved probabilistic seismic hazard assessment methodology. Two significant improvements over the previous seismic hazard assessment practices are accomplished in this study: advanced seismic source characterization models in terms of source geometry and recurrence relationships are developed, and improved global ground motion models (NGA-W1 models) are employed to represent the ground motion variability. Plan...
Displacement-based fragility functions for low- and mid-rise ordinary concrete buildings
Akkar, S; Sucuoğlu, Haluk; Yakut, Ahmet (SAGE Publications, 2005-11-01)
Fragility functions are determined for low- and mid-rise ordinary concrete buildings, which constitute the most vulnerable construction type in Turkey as well as several other countries prone to earthquakes. A hybrid approach is employed where building capacities are obtained from field data and their dynamic responses are calculated by response history analyses. Field data consists of 32 sample buildings representing the general characteristics of two-to five-story substandard reinforced concrete buildings...
