One of the most important practical considerations in the optimization of steel structures is that structural members are generally to be selected from available steel profiles. Furthermore, the solutions produced according to the national specifications are undoubtedly valuable from the point of view of applicability in real-life practice. This paper reports the development of a computer-based systematic approach for discrete optimal design of planar and space structures composed of one-dimensional elements. The main characteristic of the solution methodology is the use of a genetic algorithm (GA) as the optimizer. Applications and experience on steel frame and truss structures are discussed. The results of comparative studies of the GA against other various discrete and continuous optimization algorithms for a class of representative structural design problems are reported to show the efficiency of the former. It is observed that a GA often finds the region of the search space containing the global optimum, but not the true optimum itself. Also, in this study an approach based on a proposed multilevel optimization is tested and proved to overcome this shortcoming.

Optimum design of high-rise steel buildings using an evolution strategy integrated parallel algorithm
Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Kurç, Özgür (Elsevier BV, 2011-11-01)
The present study addresses a parallel solution algorithm for optimum design of large steel space frame structures, in particular high-rise steel buildings. The algorithm implements a novel discrete evolution strategy optimization method to effectively size these systems for minimum weight according to the provisions of ASD-AISC specification and various practical aspects of design process. The multitasking environment in the algorithm rests on a master-slave model based parallelization of the optimization ...
OPTIMIZATION AND SENSITIVITY OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS
ERBATUR, F; ALZAID, R; DAHMAN, NA (Elsevier BV, 1992-12-03)
This paper is concerned with the optimum design of prestressed concrete beams. Both minimum weight and minimum cost optimization formulations are given for simply supported beams having three different sections. Sensitivity of the optimum designs, with respect to various design parameters, are also discussed. The formulation is programmed for interactive use on micro-computers. An example is given and results are discussed.
Drift based damage functions for reinforced concrete columns
Erduran, E; Yakut, Ahmet (Elsevier BV, 2004-01-01)
Research has been undertaken to develop damage curves for reinforced concrete column members. A broad range of parameters that influence the damageability of reinforced concrete columns were investigated using finite element program ANSYS v6.1. Damage curves expressed in terms of interstory drift ratio were developed for three levels of ductility from the results of numerical investigations. The levels of ductility were determined based on the axial load level and the transverse reinforcement ratio. These c...
MODELING OF CONTROL FORCES FOR KINEMATICAL CONSTRAINTS IN MULTIBODY SYSTEMS DYNAMICS - A NEW APPROACH
IDER, SK (Elsevier BV, 1991-01-01)
Conventionally kinematical constrains in multibody systems are treated similar to geometrical constraints and are modeled by constraint reaction forces which are perpendicular to constraint surfaces. However, in reality, one may want to achieve the desired kinematical conditions by control forces having different directions in relation to the constraint surfaces. In this paper the conventional equations of motion for multibody systems, subject to kinematical constraints, are generalized by introducing gener...
The theorems of structural variation for rectangular finite elements for plate flexure
Saka, MP (Elsevier BV, 2005-11-01)
The theorems of structural variation predict the forces and displacements throughout a structure without the need of fresh analysis when the physical properties of one or more members are altered or even its topology is changed due to removal of one or more of its elements. It has been shown that a single linear elastic analysis of a parent structure under the applied loads and a set of unit-loading cases is sufficient to determine the elastic, non-linear elastic and even elasticplastic response of number o...
