This paper is concerned with the optimum design of prestressed concrete beams. Both minimum weight and minimum cost optimization formulations are given for simply supported beams having three different sections. Sensitivity of the optimum designs, with respect to various design parameters, are also discussed. The formulation is programmed for interactive use on micro-computers. An example is given and results are discussed.

VIBRATION OF MINDLIN PLATES SYMMETRICALLY COLUMN-SUPPORTED AT 4 POINTS
AKSU, G (Elsevier BV, 1993-09-17)
This paper deals with the free vibration characteristics of Mindlin plates that are symmetrically column-supported at four points. The finite difference technique, based on the energy approach, is used. The first lowest four natural frequency parameters are determined for various values of the finite area of the column supports. Detailed results are given for various values of relative thickness ratio and the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia are examined.
Optimum design of high-rise steel buildings using an evolution strategy integrated parallel algorithm
Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Kurç, Özgür (Elsevier BV, 2011-11-01)
The present study addresses a parallel solution algorithm for optimum design of large steel space frame structures, in particular high-rise steel buildings. The algorithm implements a novel discrete evolution strategy optimization method to effectively size these systems for minimum weight according to the provisions of ASD-AISC specification and various practical aspects of design process. The multitasking environment in the algorithm rests on a master-slave model based parallelization of the optimization ...
Development of computational software for analysis of curved girders under construction loads
Topkaya, Cem (Elsevier BV, 2003-09-01)
The analysis of horizontally curved, trapezoidal steel girders presents a variety of computational challenges. During the erection and construction stages before a concrete deck is available to form a closed section, these girders are weak in torsion and susceptible to warping. Considering the design of an entire bridge system, current design approaches favor the use of a grid analysis methodology. While the use of a grid analysis procedure offers the advantage of computational efficiency, it is unable to c...
OPTIMUM DESIGN OF FRAMES
ERBATUR, F; ALHUSSAINY, MM (Elsevier BV, 1992-12-03)
In this paper optimum design of frames is discussed. Specifically, minimum weight design of steel frames in the elastic range of material behaviour is treated. The solution algorithm is designed and programmed for use on micro-computers to suit a design office environment. Stress and slenderness constraints are considered, however displacement constraints may readily be implemented. Three examples are given and the results are discussed.
Optimal design of planar and space structures with genetic algorithms
Erbatur, F; Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Tutuncu, I; Kilic, H (Elsevier BV, 2000-03-01)
One of the most important practical considerations in the optimization of steel structures is that structural members are generally to be selected from available steel profiles. Furthermore, the solutions produced according to the national specifications are undoubtedly valuable from the point of view of applicability in real-life practice. This paper reports the development of a computer-based systematic approach for discrete optimal design of planar and space structures composed of one-dimensional element...
