On 17 August 1999, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck the Eastern Marmara Region of Turkey, destroying hundreds of buildings and killing thousands of people. It is not enough to analyze the damage inflicted by the earthquake solely in terms of its physical features (magnitude, epicenter or depth). Regional policies (particularly industrialization and urbanization) and unsuitable land-use planning/engineering processes also played a role. This paper presents a critical evaluation of these factors with reference to Adapazarı, one of the cities that suffered heavily from these non-natural processes.

Re-characterization of architectural style of reinforced concrete building facades by exterior seismic strengthening
Toker, Saadet; Ünay, Ali İhsan (Elsevier BV, 2006-12-01)
Recent earthquakes in Turkey have shown the poor seismic performance of reinforced concrete residential buildings. This led to widespread utilization of several strengthening methods, each of which is convenient in different aspects. However, what is required to apply any of these methods is to evacuate the building in question, since the interruptions are mostly within the building and to the structural members. In this article, a method is introduced for external strengthening of typical reinforced concre...
Reclaiming the right to the city: Reflections on the urban uprisings in Turkey
Kuymulu, Mehmet Barış (Informa UK Limited, 2013-07-08)
The spark that drew Istanbul into a fire of protest and uprising was initially set off by a modest ‘occupy style’ peaceful resistance, staged against the destruction of an historically public park, an urban commons, in order to make way for yet another shopping mall in Istanbul. Following explicit police violence against the protestors, who were openly discredited by the government for being a few looters, the urban centers of Turkey saw a full-fledged uprising, gathering considerable international steam as...
Analysis of existing building stock according to mitigation plan objectives
Hasdemir, Berna; Balamir, Murat; Department of City and Regional Planning (2010)
Earthquakes in Turkey, among all natural disasters claim the highest losses in terms of human lives, material and economic assets. Most of the lives are lost within the collapsed buildings, and most of the material and economic losses are again directly related to the functional capacities of the building stock. The method of risk assessment in the existing building stock is therefore an essential step in the maintenance of safer urban environments. Analysis of risks in the building stock is usually claimed...
Urban conservation legacy of the Turkish planning system: tracing spatial change in the Ankara Acropolis, from 1923 onwards
Demiroz, Merve; Şahin Güçhan, Neriman (Informa UK Limited, 2020-04-16)
This paper examines the conservation history of the Ankara Acropolis, today named 'Haci-Bayram District', and the spatial change in this historic environment linked to the development of urban conservation since the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923. We drew upon archival research such as old maps, aerial images, former analyses, technical plans and project reports, legal decisions by conservation boards and a field survey to illustrate the morphological change triggered by conservation attempts. H...
Housing production under less-regulated market conditions in Turkey
Türel, Ali; KOÇ, HÜLYA (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2015-03-01)
In recent years, the numbers of annual housing starts in Turkey have greatly exceeded the increases in the number of households. Such high levels of housing output occur under less-regulated and highly competitive market conditions, and when conventional housing policies associated with a welfare state are not introduced. In addition, the decentralized planning system and the potential for profit through housing investments when compared to most other sectors appear to have been instrumental in the high lev...
