This article presents a comprehensive research project undertaken for the development of a bridge management system (BMS) for the General Directorate of Highways in Turkey, establishment of a prototype inspection program and the development of a new model, implemented within the BMS, for element condition state evaluation based on element damage types. As an introduction, a summary of the BMS development process is presented. Then, a detailed explanation of the newly developed model for element condition evaluation based on the effects of different damage types is given. The model presented herein extends the percentage-based condition state distribution for a bridge element to percentage and damage-based condition state distribution. This is achieved by considering all damage types a given bridge element may be subjected to. The model is already implemented into the newly developed BMS. It has been found that the newly implemented model will enable the inspector to more accurately define the condition state distribution of a bridge element taking into account both quantitative and qualitative characteristics of damage. Using the developed methodology and damage weight factors, it is possible to calculate a weighted condition state percentage distribution for a bridge element by taking into consideration the importance and urgency of different damage types.

Development of a Bridge Inspection and Management Project
Akgül, Ferhat (2010-09-24)
A research project is undertaken for the combined inspection and management of a pilot group of road bridges in Turkey based on the development of a bridge management system (BMS) for the General Directorate of Highways. The pilot study consists of visual inspections of 200 bridges and detailed inspections of 10 bridges. Visual inspections are planned to be carried out by photogrammetric techniques while detailed inspections will include techniques such as strength determination using probe test systems, ul...
Potential Utilization of Building Information Models for Planning Maintenance Activities
Akçamete Güngör, Aslı; Garrett, James H (2010-06-30)
The opportunities for leveraging Building Information Models (BIMs) for facility operations are compelling and yet utilization of BIMs during building operation and maintenance is falling behind the BIM implementations for design and construction. Current studies of BIMs used for the operations phase and commercially available technologies focus on transferring information from the design and construction phases to the operations phase by enabling creation and capturing of digital facility information throu...
Development of a high-fideliity transient aerothermal model for a helicopter turboshaft engine for inlet distortion and engine deterioration simulations
Novikov, Yaroslav; Uzol, Oğuz; Kutay, Ali Türker; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2012)
Presented in this thesis is the development of a high-fidelity aerothermal model for GE T700 turboshaft engine. The model was constructed using thermodynamic relations governing change of flow properties across engine components, and by applying real component maps for the compressor and turbines as well as empirical relations for specific heats. Included in the model were bleed flows, turbine cooling and heat sink effects. Transient dynamics were modeled using inter-component volumes method in which mass i...
Assessment of a model with char attrition for a bubbling atmospheric fluidized-bed combustor
Gogebakan, Y; Selçuk, Nevin (2004-05-01)
A comprehensive model, previously developed and tested for prediction of behavior of continuous fluidized-bed combustors, is extended to incorporate char attrition and is applied to the simulation of a 0.3 MegaWatt (MW) atmospheric bubbling fluidized-bed combustor burning lignites with high Volatile Matter/Fixed Carbon (VM/FC) ratios in their own ashes. The effect of this incorporation is assessed by comparing the predictions of the model with and without attrition with measurements. Favorable comparisons o...
Design and implementation of A MEMS based gravimetric detector for cytometry applications
Bayraktar, Ekrem; Bayraktar, Ekrem; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2010)
This thesis reports design and implementation of a MEMS based gravimetric resonator for cytometry applications. There are mainly two objectives of this thesis; to enable in-flow analysis and to perform closed loop operation that does not require any additional processing or equipment. A novel MEMS based resonator with in-flow capabilities is proposed for detection of agents inside micro channels. High resolution of mass detection inside micro channels is planned to be succeeded with lateral motion in the mi...
