This paper deals with the problem of modeling Web information resources using expert knowledge and personalized user information for improved Web searching capabilities. We propose a "Web information space" model, which is composed of Web-based information resources (HTML/XML [Hypertext Markup Language/Extensible Markup Language] documents on the Web), expert advice repositories (domain-expert-specified meta-data for information resources), and personalized information about users (captured as user profiles that indicate users' preferences about experts as well as users' knowledge about topics).

Exploiting Navigational Queries for Result Presentation and Caching in Web Search Engines
Ozcan, Rifat; Altıngövde, İsmail Sengör; Ulusoy, Ozgur (Wiley, 2011-04-01)
Caching of query results is an important mechanism for efficiency and scalability of web search engines. Query results are cached and presented in terms of pages, which typically include 10 results each. In navigational queries, users seek a particular website, which would be typically listed at the top ranks (maybe, first or second) by the search engine, if found. For this type of query, caching and presenting results in the 10-per-page manner may waste cache space and network bandwidth. In this article, w...
Semantic information-based alternative plan generation for multiple query optimization
Polat, Faruk; Alhajj, R (Elsevier BV, 2001-09-01)
This paper addresses the impact of semantic information about queries on alternative plan generation (APG) for multiple query optimization (MQO). MQO covers optimizing the execution of a set of queries together where each query in the set to be optimized has several alternative execution plans. A multiple query optimizer selects an alternative plan for each query to obtain an optimal global execution plan. Our approach uses information such as common relations, common possible joins and common conditions to...
Improving pattern quality in web usage mining by using semantic information
Karagöz, Pınar (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2012-03-01)
Frequent Web navigation patterns generated by using Web usage mining techniques provide valuable information for several applications such as Web site restructuring and recommendation. In conventional Web usage mining, semantic information of the Web page content does not take part in the pattern generation process. In this work, we investigate the effect of semantic information on the patterns generated for Web usage mining in the form of frequent sequences. To this aim, we developed a technique and a fram...
Topic-centric querying of web information resources
Altıngövde, İsmail Sengör; Ulusoy, O; Ozsoyoglu, G; Ozsoyoglu, ZM (2001-01-01)
This paper deals with the problem of modeling web information resources using expert knowledge and personalized user information, and querying them in terms of topics and topic relationships. We propose a model for web information resources, and a query language SQL-TC (Topic-Centric SQL) to query the model. The model is composed of web-based information resources (XML or HTML documents on the web), expert advice repositories (domain-expert-specified metadata for information resources), and personalized inf...
Data integration over horizontally partitioned databases in service-oriented data grids
Sunercan, Hatice Kevser Sönmez; Çiçekli, Fehime Nihan; Alpdemir, Mahmut Nedim; Department of Computer Engineering (2010)
Information integration over distributed and heterogeneous resources has been challenging in many terms: coping with various kinds of heterogeneity including data model, platform, access interfaces; coping with various forms of data distribution and maintenance policies, scalability, performance, security and trust, reliability and resilience, legal issues etc. It is obvious that each of these dimensions deserves a separate thread of research efforts. One particular challenge among the ones listed above tha...
