An analytical model based on Tresca's yield criterion and its L associated flow rule is developed to analyze the thermoelastoplastic response of a linearly hardening cylinder subjected to a nonuniform heat source and convective heat transfer condition at the external boundary. Closed form solutions are obtained for a state of generalized plane strain in different stages of elastic-plastic deformation. Considering a cylinder that is constrained axially, the plastic deformation commences at the axis and depending on the convective boundary condition, another plastic region may develop at the surface before the fully plastic state is reached. A calculation procedure is developed to determine the critical values of the heat-transfer coefficient, for which a third plastic region at the surface does not occur. The effect of various parameters on the critical heat-transfer coefficient is investigated. The residual stresses attained upon unloading are also determined and it is shown that the primary and secondary stresses fall within the shakedown regime.

Contact mechanics problem between an orthotropic graded coating and a rigid punch of an arbitrary profile
ARSLAN, ONUR; Dağ, Serkan (Elsevier BV, 2018-01-01)
Singular integral equation (SIE) and finite element methods are developed for sliding contact analysis of a finite thickness orthotropic graded coating, which is perfectly bonded to an isotropic substrate. Orthotropic stiffness coefficients of the coating vary exponentially through the coating thickness. The coating is assumed to be loaded by a frictional rigid punch of an arbitrary profile. In the SIE formulation, governing partial differential equations are derived in accordance with the theory of plane e...
Elastoplastic analysis of nonlinearly hardening variable thickness annular disks under external pressure
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim; Guven, U (Elsevier BV, 2005-05-01)
Based on von Mises' yield criterion, deformation theory of plasticity and Swift's hardening law, elasto-plastic deformation of variable thickness annular disks subjected to external pressure is studied. A nonlinear shooting method using Newton's iterations with numerically approximated tangent is designed for the solution of the problem. Considering a thickness profile in the form of a general parabolic function, the condition of occurrence of plastic deformation at the inner and outer edges of the annular ...
Thermoelastic response of a fin exhibiting elliptic thickness profile: An analtical solution
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim (Elsevier BV, 2008-03-01)
A thermoelastic analytical solution of a variable thickness cooling fin problem is presented. A variable thickness annular fin mounted on a hot rotating rigid shaft is considered. The thickness of the fin is assumed to vary radially in a continuously variable nonlinear elliptic form. An energy equation that accounts for the conduction, convective heat loss from peripheral and edge surfaces, thickness variation and rotation is adopted. The thermoelastic equation is obtained under formal assumptions of plane ...
Stress distributions in energy generating two-layer tubes subjected to free and radially constrained boundary conditions
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim; Argeso, H (Elsevier BV, 2003-03-01)
Analytical solutions are obtained for thermally induced axisymmetric elastic and elastic-plastic deformations in heat generating composite tubes having a free inner and a radially constrained outer boundaries. Tresca's yield condition and its associated flow rule are used to determine the elastic-plastic response of the assembly. Depending on the physical properties of the materials used, eight different plastic regions with different mathematical forms of the yield condition may occur in the assembly. The ...
Analysis of single phase convective heat transfer in microtubes and microchannels
Çetin, Barbaros; Yüncü, Hafit; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
Heat transfer analysis of two-dimensional, incompressible, constant property, hydrodynamically developed, thermally developing, single phase laminar flow in microtubes and microchannels between parallel plates with negligible axial conduction is performed for constant wall temperature and constant wall heat flux thermal boundary conditions for slip flow regime. Fully developed velocity profile is determined analytically, and energy equation is solved by using finite difference method for both of the geometr...
