Surface properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were altered by purification with nitric acid, sulfuric acid, ammonium hydroxide, and hydrogen peroxide. As-received and purified CNT-based conductive poly( ethylene terephthalate) composites were prepared with a twin-screw extruder. The effects of CNT purification on the surface properties of the CNTs and on the morphology and electrical and mechanical properties of CNT-based composites were investigated. Surface energy measurements showed that the acidic component of the surface energies of the CNTs increased after purification. According to Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the purification resulted in the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surfaces of the CNTs. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis results indicate the removal of the metallic catalyst residues and an increase in the oxygen content of the CNT surfaces as a result of the purification procedure. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed a change in the crystalline structure of the CNTs after purification. All of the composites prepared with the purified CNTs had higher electrical resistivities and tensile and impact strength values than the composites based on the as-received CNTs because of the functional groups and defect sites formed on the surfaces of the CNTs during purification. Effect of surface treatment on electrical conductivity of carbon black filled conductive polymer composites
Koysuren, Ozcan; Yesil, Sertan; Bayram, Göknur (Wiley, 2007-06-05)
Two different types of surface modifiers, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and formamide, were applied to carbon black (CB) particles to lower electrical resistivity of polymer composites prepared by treated CB. Two different matrices, low-density polyethylene and nylon 6, were chosen to compound with surface modified CB. Surface energy of CB was increased by adding amine or amide functional groups during surface treatment of CB. According to electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), chemical modifica...
Effect of a carbon black surface treatment on the microwave properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate)/carbon black composites
Koysuren, Ozcan; Yesil, Sertan; Bayram, Göknur; Secmen, Mustafa; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem (Wiley, 2008-07-05)
A surface treatment was applied to carbon black to improve the electrical and microwave properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-based composites. Three different formamide solutions with 1, 2, and 3 wt % concentrations were prepared to modify the surface chemistry of carbon black. Microwave properties such as the absorption loss, return loss, insertion loss, and dielectric constant were measured in the frequency range of 812 GHz (X-band range). Composites containing formamide-treated carbon black e...
Effect of heat treatment on the stress and structure evolution of plasma deposited boron nitride thin films
Anutgan, T. Aliyeva; Anutgan, M.; Wdemir, O.; Atilgan, I.; Katircioglu, B. (Elsevier BV, 2008-03-25)
Boron nitride (BN) thin films are deposited at 573 K by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) with ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen diluted diborane (15% B2H6 in H-2) source gases. UV-visible and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies together with surface profilometry are used for the film characterization. These films are hydrogenated (BN:H) whose hydrogen content is pursued following the 1.5 h annealing process at 748 K, 923 K and 1073 K under nitrogen atmosphere. Hydrogen escape with the...
Synthesis and characterization of multi-hollow opaque polymer pigments
Asmaoglu, Serdar; Gündüz, Güngör; MAVİŞ, BORA; Colak, Uner (Wiley, 2016-08-05)
A new generation multihollow opaque polymer pigment was synthesized by suspension polymerization of water-in-oil-in-water emulsion method, where methyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate monomer mixture was used as oil phase. The effects of surfactant and cosurfactant composition in terms of hydrophilic/lipophilic balance on the stability of the water-in-oil emulsion and the size of water droplets were studied. Low droplet sizes and the optimum stability were obtained with Span 80&Tween 80 surf...
Conducting Polymer Composites of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Filled Doped Polyaniline
Yilmaz, Faris; Kucukyavuz, Zuhal (Wiley, 2009-01-15)
A multiwalled carbon nanotube (c-MWNT)/polyaniline (PANI) composite was synthesized by an in situ chemical oxidative polymerization process. With the carbon nanotube loading increased from 0 to 30 wt %,, the conductivity also increased and became weakly temperature-dependent. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies showed that the synthesis by an in situ process led to effective site-selective interactions between the quinoid ring of the PANI and the multiwalled nanotubes, facilitating charge-transf...
