A non-destructive study was conducted on the 13th century caravanserai of Agzikarahan in Aksaray, Turkey, suffering from problems of seasonal rising damp in its lower parts. Both infrared (IR) thermography and a levelling survey were used for determining whether or not a surface-water drainage system was incorporated into its original construction and what its existing condition was. A map of its immediate periphery was produced, indicating overall slopes and local falls in reference to overhead roof drainage components. Damp zones of the grounds were mapped and neighbouring walls, as well as any underground drainage path or pipeline, were detected by IR thermography. Results showed that rising damp problems were associated with inadequate site grading and reverse falls in some areas around the building. Conditions for a satisfactory drainage were pointed out and occasional re-grading of the surrounding grounds as a preventive measure against ponding were suggested. The joint interpretation of IR thermography and levelling survey results provided a good combination for examining sub-surface and surface-water drainage systems and enhanced the accuracy and effectiveness of the survey.

Consequences of dewatering cement mortars incorporated with ground Bayburt stone
Ince, Ceren; Derogar, Shahram (Thomas Telford Ltd., 2018-06-01)
The detrimental effects of the rapid dewatering of cement mortars due to the interaction of wet mortar and brick substrate at the freshly mixed state in masonry construction are often addressed in the literature. The desorptivity and hence very high water releasing ability of cement mortars result in a great water loss during dewatering that significantly affects the fresh and hardened state properties of the end product. The paper therefore investigates the possible role of ground Bayburt stone incorporati...
Impact of fertilizer usage on phosphorus loads to Lake Uluabat
BULUT, Elif; Aksoy, Ayşegül (Elsevier BV, 2008-06-25)
This work investigated the role of fertilizer application rate on phosphorus (P) transport and loading to Lake Uluabat in Turkey. For this purpose ArcView Interface of Soil and Water Assessment Tool 2000 (AVSWAT) was used. Results showed that when the fertilizer amount applied to agricultural lands was doubled, the P load to Lake Uluabat increased by 32%. P transported to Lake Uluabat declined by about 6, 10 and 16%, when the fertilizer usage at the agricultural fields were decreased by 20, 30 and 50%, resp...
Twinning-induced shear banding and its control in rolling of magnesium
Atik, Kubra; Efe, Mert (Elsevier BV, 2018-05-16)
Rolling of magnesium sheets is challenging at temperatures below 200 degrees C due to the strain localization and shear banding associated with the twinning activity. In this study, magnesium sheets with basal, off-basal (90 degrees tilted), and mixed (50% basal + 50% off-basal) textures are rolled between room temperature and 165 degrees C to understand and control the twinning-induced localizations. While the fraction of strain-localized regions increases from 0.1 to 0.6 with strain and temperature, the i...
Influence of nature of silica source on template-free synthesis of ZSM-5
Kalıpçılar, Halil (Wiley, 2001-01-01)
Synthesis of ZSM-5 from template-free batches which preceded the preparation of template-free ZSM-5 layers on porous supports was studied to ascertain the effect of nature of silica source on the purity of template-free ZSM-5. Silicic acid and two colloidal silica sols were used as silica sources to prepare the template-free batches with a molar composition of 6.5Na(2)O:Al2O3:80SiO(2):3196H(2)O. One of the colloidal silica sols contained methanol as stabilizer while the other did not. The product purity and...
Studies on blended cements containing a high volume of natural pozzolans
Uzal, B; Turanlı, Lutfullah (Elsevier BV, 2003-11-01)
This paper presents the results of an investigation on the characteristics of laboratory-produced blended portland cements containing 55% by weight volcanic tuffs from Turkey. Volcanic tuffs from two different resources were used. Using different grinding times, particle size distribution, setting time, compressive strength, and alkali-silica activity of the blended cements were investigated and compared with reference portland cements ground for the same time period. For the compressive strength test, a su...
