Titanium diboride was produced both by volume combustion synthesis (VCS) and by mechanochemical synthesis (MCP) through the reaction of TiO2, B2O3 and Mg. VCS products, expected to be composed of TiB2 and MgO, were found to contain also side products such as Mg2TiO4, Mg3B2O6, MgB2 and TiN. HCl leaching was applied to the reaction products with the objective of removing MgO and the side products. Formation of TiN could be prevented by conducting the VCS under an argon atmosphere. Mg2TiO4 did not form when 40% excess Mg was used. Wet ball milling of the products before leaching was found to be effective in removal of Mg3B2O6 during leaching in I M HCl. When stoichiometric starting mixtures were used, all of the side products could be removed after wet ball milling in ethanol and leaching in 5 M HCl when pure TiB2 was obtained with a molar yield of 30%. Pure TiB2 could also be obtained at a molar yield of 45.6% by hot leaching of VCS products at 75 degrees C in 5 M HCl, omitting the wet ball milling step. By MCP, products containing only TiB2 and MgO were obtained after 15 h of ball milling. Leaching in 0.5 M HCl for 3 min was found to be sufficient for elimination of MgO. Molar yield of TiB2 was 89.6%, much higher than that of VCS. According to scanning electron microscope analyses, the TiB2 produced had average grain size of 0.27 +/- 0.08 mu m.

Preparation and characterization of zeolite framework stabilized cuprous oxide nanoparticles
Zahmakiran, Mehmet; Özkar, Saim (Elsevier BV, 2009-05-15)
Zeolite framework stabilized copper(I) oxide nanoparticles (4.8 +/- 2.6 nm) were prepared for the first time by using a four step procedure: the ion exchange of Cu(2+) ions with the extra framework Na(+) ions in Zeolite-Y, the reduction of the Cu(2+) ions within the cavities of zeolite with sodium borohydride in aqueous solution, the dehydration of Zeolite-Y with the copper(0) nanoclusters, and the oxidation of intrazeolite copper(0) nanoclusters by O(2) at room temperature. Zeolite stabilized copper(I) oxi...
Conducting polymers of decanedioic acid bis-(4-pyrrol-1-yl-phenyl) ester
Çırpan, Ali; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Elsevier BV, 2004-05-15)
A dipyrrolyl monomer was synthesized via the reaction between 4-pyrrol-1-yl phenol and decanedioyl dichloride. The electrochemical behavior of this monomer was studied. Polymerization of decanedioic acid bis-(4-pyrrol-1-yi-phenyl) ester (DAPE) was achieved by chemical and constant current electrolyses methods. Copolymerization of DAPE with thiophene was performed by constant potential electrolysis in acetonitrile-tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAFB), dichloromethane-TBAFB, solvent-electrolyte couple...
Synthesis, crystal structure and characterization of new transition metal compounds of bromophenols: Bis(2,4,6-tribromophenolato) di(N-methylimidazole)M(II) (M=Co, Cu)
Camurlu, P; Yılmaz, Ayşen; Tatar, L; Kisakurek, D; Ulku, D (Wiley, 2005-03-01)
Bis(2,4,6-tribromophenolato)di(N-methyl imidazole)M(II), where M stands for cobalt and copper metals, was synthesized via reaction of the corresponding metal sulphate and 2,4,6-tribromophenolate in aqueous media in the presence of N-methyl imidazole and sodium hydroxide. Although various crystallization procedures were applied only cobalt complex was obtained as single crystals. The Co(II) ion has a distorted octahedral enviroment involving two O atoms and two N atoms of the Bis(2,4,6-tribromopbenolato)di(N...
Improvement of fracture resistance in a glass matrix optomechanical composite by minicomposite unit bridging
Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi (Elsevier BV, 2005-10-15)
Minicomposite unit bridging, which was experimentally determined to be the dominant toughening mechanism resulting in the R-curve behavior of the Al2O3-ZrO2 minicomposite-reinforced glass matrix optomechanical composite, was studied quantitatively using luminescence spectroscopy. Applied stress induced shift of the luminescence bands of the minicomposite reinforcement was calibrated. Using the experimentally obtained calibration curve, axial stresses could be mapped along the minicomposite embedded in the g...
Synthesis of aromatic poly(pyridinium salt)s and their electrochromic properties
Keshtov, M. L.; UDUM, YASEMİN; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Kochurov, V. S.; Khokhlov, A. R. (Elsevier BV, 2013-05-15)
Synthesis of a series of new conjugated electrochromic polymeric pyridinium salts containing main-chain triphenylamine and their electrochromic properties were demonstrated. All polymers exhibit intense UV absorptions at 336-338 nm in DMF and 340-343 nm in thin film form and fluorescence centered at 410-438 nm in DMF and 460-461 nm in thin film form. The electrochromic properties of the films were investigated by electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods. Reversible redox signals with stable electr...
