The aim of this study is to automatically differentiate railroads from roads obtained by a general road extraction algorithm. In high resolution aerial images, the sleepers between railroad tracks depict a distinctive texture from other elongated objects. By employing this additional cue, a new Fourier based feature descriptor is developed to distinguish railroad objects in aerial images. After local Fourier features calculation, the periodic railroad texture is locally detected in the frequency domain.

A new algorithm for automatic road network extraction in multispectral satellite images
Karaman, Ersin; Çınar, Umut; Gedik, Ekin; Çetin, Yasemin; Halıcı, Uğur (2012-05-09)
The aim of this study is to develop automatic road extraction algorithm in satellite images. As roads have different width and surface material characteristics in urban and rural areas, a modular approach for road extraction algorithm is desired. In this study, edge detection, segmentation, clustering and vegetation and land cover analyses are used. In order to combine the results of different methods, a score map based on segmentation analysis is constructed. Quantitative and visual results show that this ...
Junction extraction on road masks by pruned skeletons
Cinar, UMUT; KARAMAN, ERSİN; GEDİK, Ekin; ÇETİN, YASEMİN; Halıcı, Uğur (2012-09-26)
This study proposes a new method to detect road junctions from existing road masks obtained from geospatial databases. Moreover, this method can be used to extract junction points from the road masks generated by automatic or semiautomatic road extraction algorithms. The algorithm is intended to lower the false detection rate by refining the input road mask. Vector space analysis of the pruned road skeleton provides a simple yet robust detection and classification strategy. Empirical results demonstrate the...
ESTIMATION OF VEHICLE SIGNALS FOR AUTONOMOUS DRIVING APPLICATIONS
Temurtaş, Halil; Schmidt, Klaus Verner; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2022-9-14)
The aim of this study is to develop a state estimator for autonomous driving applications. The increasing demand and usage of self-driving vehicle technologies and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) play a vital role in vehicle safety. In order to ensure their operations, these autonomous driving applications require the observation of various vehicle signals. However, some of the necessary signals might not be directly observed by the sensors or the sensors to observe the necessary signal might be t...
Numerical modelling of continuous transverse grates for hydraulic efficiency /
Sezenöz, Berk; Tiğrek, Şahnaz; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
In this study, numerical analyses of newly proposed grated inlet system for small roads are carried out. The model is based on a setup constructed in Hydromechanics Laboratory of METU. The physical model which is a rectangular channel of 0.9m width acts as a small road and continuous transverse grate system is installed as an inlet structure. The physical conditions were modeled by using Flow 3D software. The rates of the intercepted flows are measured and compared with the results of experimental data coll...
Analytical Fragility Curves for Ordinary Highway Bridges in Turkey
AVŞAR, ÖZGÜR; Yakut, Ahmet; Caner, Alp (SAGE Publications, 2011-11-01)
This study focuses on the development of analytical fragility curves for the ordinary highway bridges constructed after the 1990s. Four major bridge classes were employed based on skew angle, number of columns per bent, and span number (only multispan bridges). Nonlinear response-history analyses (NRHA) were conducted for each bridge sample using a detailed 3-D analytical model subjected to earthquake ground motions of varying seismic intensities. A component-based approach that uses several engineering dem...
