The resonance behavior of localized surface plasmons in silver and gold nanoparticles was studied in the visible and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Arrays of nano-sized gold (Au) and silver (Ag) particles with different properties were produced with electron-beam lithography technique over glass substrates. The effect of the particle size, shape variations, period, thickness, metal type, substrate type and sulfidation were studied via transmission and reflectance measurements. The results are compared with the theoretical calculations based on the DDA simulations performed by software developed in this study. We propose a new intensity modulation technique based on localized surface plasmons in nanoparticles with asymmetric shapes. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Effect of solvent refractive index on the surface plasmon resonance nanoparticle optical absorption
Ertaş, Gülay (American Scientific Publishers, 2007-12-01)
Optical properties of plasmon coupled silver and gold nanoparticles were studied as a function of the refractive index of the surrounding medium. Our studies confirmed that the effect of changes in the refractive index of the surrounding medium was more difficult to demonstrate from an experimental point of view, because of the very high susceptibility of nanoparticles to aggregate in aqueous and organic solvents. Whereas the position of the absorption bands of triiodide in these solvents shows a clear depe...
DEPENDENT ABSORPTION AND SCATTERING BY INTERACTING NANOPARTICLES
Donmezer, Fatma Nazli; Menguc, M. Pinar; Okutucu Özyurt, Hanife Tuba (2010-06-19)
Dependent light scattering and absorption patterns of metallic nano-sized particles in interaction with other spherical and cone-like structures were investigated. The numerical solution of the light scattering problem was obtained using DDSCAT7.0 code. The surface integration of the Poynting vector is performed to estimate the spectral absorption by individual particles. Parametric studies were conducted to examine the effects of different parameters, including the geometry, size, shape and the position of...
Effect of magnetic field and gamma irradiation on the electrical properties and structure of the Tl-based ceramic superconductors
Ozkan, H; Hasanlı, Nızamı; Kayed, T (IOP Publishing, 2000-02-01)
The voltage-current (V-I) characteristics, critical temperatures and the critical currents of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (Tl-2212) and Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 (Tl-2223) ceramic superconductors were studied in magnetic fields up to 80 mT after several gamma irradiations up to 100 MR. The effect of gamma irradiation on the structure of these materials has also been studied. The normal state resistance increases by 20-30% with gamma irradiation, most of the changes taking place in low gamma doses up to 10 MR. The critical temperat...
Influence of nanoparticle shape on colloidal plasmonic interface properties
Sarıgül, Elif; Bek, Alpan; Department of Physics (2014)
Nanoparticles bearing free charges, interact very strongly with incoming electromagnetic radiation at certain frequencies called the plasmon resonance frequencies, depending on the size, shape and material properties of the particle and the medium. In order to enhance the light scattering by a two dimensional network of such plasmonic nanoparticles several strategies can be followed. In this thesis, it was pursued the fabrication and characterization of the nanoparticle decorated surfaces by colloidal solut...
Effect of thermal neutron irradiation on the elastic constants of tourmaline
Özkan, H. (Informa UK Limited, 1987-2)
The effect of thermal neutron irradiation due to the B10(n, α)Li7 reaction on the elastic wave velocities and the elastic moduli of tourmaline crystals has been studied. Oriented tourmaline samples have been irradiated with thermal neutrons to 7.6 × 1018n/cm2 and the elastic wave velocities determined by ultrasonic measurements. The elastic wave velocities are not affected by thermal neutron irradiation below 8 × 10l7n/cm2, effects starting to appear at approximately 1 × l018n/cm2 with more important decrea...
