We present direct and linear measurements of the normal stiffness and damping of a confined, few molecule thick water layer. The measurements were obtained by use of a small amplitude (0.36 Angstrom), off-resonance atomic force microscopy technique. We measured stiffness and damping oscillations revealing up to seven molecular layers separated by 2.526+/-0.482 Angstrom. Relaxation times could also be calculated and were found to indicate a significant slow-down of the dynamics of the system as the confining separation was reduced. We found that the dynamics of the system is determined not only by the interfacial pressure, but more significantly by solvation effects which depend on the exact separation of tip and surface. The dynamic forces reflect the layering of the water molecules close to the mica surface and are enhanced when the tip-surface spacing is equivalent to an integer multiple of the size of the water molecules. We were able to model these results by starting from the simple assumption that the relaxation time depends linearly on the film stiffness.

Investigation of localized levels in GaS0.5Se0.5 layered crystals by means of electrical, space-charge limited current and photoconductivity measurements
Qasrawi, AF; Hasanlı, Nızamı (Wiley, 2002-11-16)
To identify the localized levels in GaS0.5Se0.5 single crystals, the dark electrical conductivity, current-voltage characteristics and photoconductivity measurements were carried out in the temperature range of 250-400 K. Temperature dependence of dark electrical conductivity and the space-charge limited current studies indicate the presence of a single discrete trapping level located at 0.31 eV below the conduction band with a density of about 1.3 x 10(15) cm(-3). The conductivity data above 320 K reveal a...
Electroluminescence generated by a metal oxide semiconductor light emitting diode (MOS-LED) with Si nanocrystals embedded in SiO2 layers by ion implantation
Kulakci, M.; Serincan, U.; Turan, Raşit (IOP Publishing, 2006-12-01)
Electroluminescence ( EL) and photoluminescence ( PL) measurements were conducted on Si-implanted SiO2 layers as a function of process and measurement parameters. Measurable light emission was observed from the metal oxide semiconductor light emitting diode ( MOS-LED) when holes are injected from the substrate. It was shown that major PL and EL emissions have the same origin. However, two important differences were observed between EL and PL spectra. The first one is the light emission from the Si substrate...
Thermally stimulated currents in layered Ga4SeS3 semiconductor
Aytekin, S; Yuksek, NS; Goktepe, M; Hasanlı, Nızamı; Aydinli, A (Wiley, 2004-10-01)
Thermally stimulated current (TSC) measurements are carried out on nominally undoped Ga4SeS3 layered semiconductor samples with the cur-rent flowing along the c-axis in the temperature range of 10 to 150 K. The results are analyzed according to various methods, such as curve fitting, initial rise and Chen's methods, which seem to be in good agreement with each other. Experimental evidence is found for the presence of three trapping centers in Ga4SeS3 with activation energies of 70, 210 and 357 meV. The calc...
Photoelectronic and electrical properties of InS crystals
Qasrawi, AF; Hasanlı, Nızamı (IOP Publishing, 2002-12-01)
To identify the localized levels in InS single crystals, the dark electrical conductivity, current-voltage characteristics and photoconductivity measurements were carried out in the temperature range of 10-350 K. Temperature dependence of dark electrical conductivity and the space-charge limited current studies indicate the presence of a single discrete trapping level located at (10 +/- 2) meV below the conduction band with a density of about 4.8 x 10(11) cm(-3). The conductivity data above 110 K reveal an ...
ANOMALOUS AMPLITUDE DEPENDENT DISLOCATION DAMPING ASSOCIATED WITH ANHARMONIC OSCILLATIONS OF A COULOMBIC KINK CHAIN IN THE NONLINEAR DISSIPATIVE ATMOSPHERE OF IMPURITY ATOMS
OGURTANI, TO (Wiley, 1991-11-16)
The effects of the anharmonic interaction of the Coulombic kink chain on the strength and the position of the cold-work internal friction peaks associated with the nonlinearly power dissipating impurity atoms are investigated by a novel numerical simulation of the related discrete mathematical macro-model. The present macroscopic model of dislocation damping which relies heavily on the microscopic theory of kink-interstitial interactions shows very strong anomalous strain amplitude as well as the bias stres...
