An analysis of the moral development of George Eliot's characters in Middlemarch according to Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of moralization
Çetinkaya, Göksev; Çileli, Fatma Meral; Department of Foreign Language Education (2003)
This study analyzes the moral development of George Eliot's characters in her novel Middlemarch according to Lawrence Kohlberg's theory called "The Cognitive-Developmental Theory of Moralization". Eliot's moral view is characterized by man's relation with other men, not man's relation with God. As long as the individuals treat others with sympathy and understanding, they can develop morally. Eliot's aim is to contribute to the creation of a happier society by presenting the harms of egoism. According to Koh...

A Gothic Ecocritical Analysis of Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Ağın, Başak (2015-12-01)
This article extends the term “gothic ecocriticism” to encompass the study of literary texts as part of the task of bridging the great divide between the theoretical and practical dimensions of environmental thought. It illustrates an ecocritical reading of Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), by especially focusing on its ecophobic configuration of nature and animals, as oppositional forces to the human domain. After setting a theoretical and contextual framework by explaining the origins of gothic ecocriticism a...

Kumbaroğlu, Arzu Büşra; Korkut Naykı, Nil; Department of English Literature (2022-8)
This thesis analyses the notion of time in Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit and Sexing the Cherry in order to demonstrate how the form and content of these novels show her changing views towards the nature of time and its relation to history. Therefore, the study construes the temporal narrative fluxes and the explorations of time and history in these novels, by investigating the character-narrators’ internal and external journeys. It does a Deleuzian reading of the novels in line with De...
