Explosives are employed extensively not only in military areas but also in civilian applications. There are many researchers working on the discovery of explosives. In recent years, synthetic and theoretical studies on polycyclic aromatic explosives have received significant interest. The present short review concentrates on the synthesis and some of the physico-chemical characteristics of energetic materials of the classes of tetraazapentalene, naphthalene, di-and tetraaza-naphthalene, pyrazolo-pyrazole, benzofuroxan, tetrazine and tetrazene derivatives as well as theoretical studies. A brief comment is also made on the emerging explosive concepts such as velocity of detonation, detonation pressure etc. The compounds in the review have the potential for subsequent applications in the area of energetic materials. Therefore, an endeavor is made to assemble the important contributions made by the various scientists in the area of energetic materials in this review.

Modeling and simulation of shaped charges
Gürel, Eser; Sert, Cüneyt; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
Shaped charges are explosive devices with a high penetration capability and are used for both civilian and military purposes. In civilian applications shaped charge devices are used in demolition works, oil drilling and mining. In the military applications, shaped charges are used against different kinds of armors, primarily as anti-tank devices. This thesis work involves the modeling and simulation of shaped charge devices, with the focus being on anti-tank warhead design. Both numerical simulation and ana...
Forward-Looking Infrared Imagery for Landmine Detection
Bayram, Aylin; Akar, Gözde (2017-04-13)
Infrared imagery is widely used in many applications in both civilian and military areas. In landmine detection, the goal is to detect the anomalies between mine surface and soil from variation of reflected/emitted thermal radiation. In this study, various types of anomaly detection techniques of IR are investigated and the feasibility of these techniques for use in landmine detection is analyzed. Additionally, effects of parameters for algorithms are compared and the parameters are optimized for increasin...
Optical design and analysis of a riflescope system
Bayar, Cevdet; Esendemir, Akif; Department of Physics (2009)
Today, riflescope systems are used widely, mostly by military forces. In this study, a riflescope working in the visible range (400-700 nm) will be designed. The riflescope will have 3 degrees field of view and maximum 15 cm total track. Total design length is limited to 15 cm because a short riflescope is more stabilized than a long one with respect to thermal instability and vibrational effects. Taken into account the cost factor, only two types of glasses will be used in the design. One of them is NBK7 a...
Experimental analysis and modelling of wear in rocket rail launchers
Açmaz, Emre; Akkök, Metin; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2011)
Launchers are military systems that are responsible for communication with munitions, safe seperation and aiming of rockets and missiles to the target. Since they are military equipments, they are used in harsh environments. One of the most important design considerations for military equipment is its maintability and one of the most important parameter which affects the maintability is wear in launchers. Therefore, for predicting the life-time of a launcher, wear should be investigated beside other paramet...
Analysis and control of gun barrel vibrations
Büyükcivelek, Fırat; Özgen, Gökhan Osman; Dursun, Tolga; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2011)
Modern battle tanks are equipped with gun stabilization systems using gyro and encoder data to stabilize the gun barrel, although these systems are very sensitive and reliable, these systems assume the gun barrel as a rigid beam, and do not use information from.
