A new natural gas pipeline is under construction to provide the gas interconnection between Turkey and Greece, as well as to create gas ring for southern Europe. The new pipeline 0.90 m in diameter will be constructed next to an existing small diameter pipeline. However, the existing pipeline was broken by a landslide occurred in February 2006 near Karacabey (Bursa). In order to investigate the causes of the landslide and suggest possible remedial measures, geological and geotechnical investigations including surface geological mapping, trial pitting, drilling with field tests, laboratory testing, and limit equilibrium analysis were carried out. Based on the gathered data, possible remedial measures are suggested to prevent the reactivation of the landslide.

Geotechnical assessment of a landslide along a natural gas pipeline for possible remediations (Karacabey-Turkey)
Topal, Tamer (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2009-04-01)
A new natural gas pipeline with a 0.90-m diameter is under construction to provide a gas connection between Turkey and Greece as well as to create a gas ring for southern Europe. The new pipeline route lies next to an existing small diameter gas pipeline broken by a landslide that occurred in February 2006 near Karacabey (Bursa). Although the existing pipeline has been temporarily repaired, either the pipeline route should be relocated or the landslide should be stabilized. The geological survey conducted i...
Wave climate study for an LNG terminal near Marmara Ereglisi, Turkey
Akyarli, Adnan; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet (1997-01-01)
A liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal has been constructed near Marmara Ereglisi - a coastal town located at the northern coast of the Sea of Marmara in Turkey - to unload imported LNG from Algeria. Regarding the wave related issues in the design of the terminal and offshore operations, a wave climate study - comprising direct wave measurements carried out by a directional type wave buoy during one year period and hindcasting studies based on ten years of hourly wind data recorded at Tekirdag meteorologica...
Modeling of gas demand using degree-day concept: Case study for Ankara
Gumrah, F; Katircioglu, D; Aykan, Y; Okumus, S; Kilincer, N (2001-02-01)
The demand for natural gas is rapidly increasing in Turkey as it is in the rest of the world. However, natural gas reserves and production are rather limited in Turkey. The bulk of the Turkish gets demand is met by imports. Russia currently accounts for 69% of Turkey's gas supplies. Physical shortages might occur; supplies for industrial production and household consumption could temporarily run short. Also, fluctuations in consumption might occur due to climatic reasons or peak daily industrial energy dema...
Investigation Of Waterhammer Problems In Çamlidere Dam - İvedik Water Treatment Plant Pipeline At Various Hydraulic Conditions
Sakabaş, Emre; Bozkuş, Zafer; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Çamlıdere Dam supplies significant portion of the potable water demand of the City of Ankara. Consequently, it is very important that the pipelines extending over 60 km between the dam and the treatment plant at İvedik operate continuously. At present, two composite parallel lines are in operation and construction of a third line is considered for the future. It is the aim of this study to investigate the water hammer problems to be expected under various scenarios and also suggest the safe operation condit...
Optimisation of the Tigris river hydropower system operations
Yalçın, Emrah; Tiğrek, Şahnaz; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Growing external energy dependence and rising oil prices are encouraging Turkey to turn to renewable energy, especially hydropower. The amended legislation on the transference of the operational rights of existing, under-construction and planned hydropower plants to the private sector and the allocation of water right licenses to develop new projects for electricity production has led to a drastic decrease of the public share in production. Consequently, conflicts related to the operation of reservoirs have...
