Joint analysis in the rock settlements of Cappadocia, Turkey
Sevindi, Gökhan; Toprak, Vedat; Department of Geological Engineering (2003)
This thesis attempts to seek a relationship between the joints developed in the ignimbrites and the rock settlements carved in the same units. Orientation of rooms, directions of walls and joints (both in the rooms and in the field) are input data used in the study. Two sites in Cappadocia (Eskigümüşler and Çanlikilise) are selected to investigate the relationship. Both sites are carved within the same ignimbrite (Kizilkaya) and are located on the south-southeastern slopes of the ignimbrite scarp. Measureme...
ON GENERALIZED LOCAL SYMMETRIES OF THE SO(2,1) INVARIANT NONLINEAR SIGMA-MODEL
BASKAL, S; ERIS, A; SATIR, A (1994-12-19)
The symmetries and associated conservation laws of the SO(2,1) invariant non-linear sigma model equations in 1+1 dimensions are investigated. An infinite family of generalized local symmetries is presented and the uniqueness of these solutions is discussed.
Fano lines in the reflection spectrum of directly coupled systems of waveguides and cavities: Measurements, modeling, and manipulation of the Fano asymmetry
Lian, Jin; Sokolov, Sergei; Yüce, Emre; Combrie, Sylvain; De Rossi, Alfredo; Mosk, Allard P. (2017-09-08)
We measured and analyzed reflection spectra of directly coupled systems of waveguides and cavities. The observed Fano lines offer insight on the reflection and coupling processes. Very different from side-coupled systems, the observed Fano line shape is not caused by the termini of the waveguide but by the coupling process between the measurement device fiber and the waveguide. Our experimental results and analytical model show that the Fano parameter that describes the Fano line shape is very sensitive to ...
Political truth, epistemological challenges of populism and post-truth
Kerem, Özcan; Grıffıth, James Edmond Carr; Department of Philosophy (2023-1)
This thesis explores the place of truth in our contemporary public discourse and the epistemological challenges it faces. It takes a look at the perceived distortion of factual reality in the form of increased lies and untruths through the contribution of the nearly all-encompassing concept of “post-truth”. The thesis highlights the central role played by the Internet and new communication mediums in the development of the post-truth condition and emphasizes the novelty they bring about. I use the works of ...
Development and characterization of composite proton exchange membranes for fuel cell applications
Akay, Ramiz Gültekin; Baç, Nurcan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2008)
Intensive research on development of alternative low cost, high temperature membranes for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is going on because of the well-known limitations of industry standard perfluoro-sulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes. To overcome these limitations such as the decrease in performance at high temperatures (>80 0C) and high cost, non-fluorinated aromatic hydrocarbon based polymers are attractive. The objective of this study is to develop alternative membranes that possess comparable ...
