The study is structured in three parts: Architectural developments in Italy during the late Republican era will be examined first in order to illustrate the absence of convincing Italic prototypes as a source and inspiration for the specific combination of a theater-like cavea with a temple and its grandiose conception. The iconographic and formal role of the Hellenistic east in the light of the ruler cult and probable prototypes will be examined in the second part. Third and last, pertinent aspects of Sullan's life, especially his singular obsession with the theater and his life-long interest in the world of drama will be investigated as a source for the design of the sanctuary at Praeneste.

‘‘Form’’ and ‘‘space’’ in Roman domestic architecture: the architectural language of the Atrium house
Şeker Ilgın, Ayşegül; Özgenel, Lale; Department of History of Architecture (2008)

The formation of a modern city: Antalya, 1920s-1980s
Bölükbaş Dayı, Esin.; Altan, T. Elvan.; Department of History of Architecture (2019)
This dissertation examines the place of the concept of “local” in architectural historiography by focusing on the modernization process of Antalya. The analysis of the process is realized within two major contexts. On the one hand, the “peripheral” position of Antalya in canonic historiography is discussed in the frame of center-periphery relations and central-local actors; on the other hand, the developments both in the city center and its hinterlands are examined through the dualities of rural and urban, ...
Architecture Of Creative Becomings: Sou Fujimoto
Pjesivac, Željka (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2021-6-30)
This study is an investigation of Sou Fujimoto’s architectural work as an example of architecture of creative becomings, above all the becoming nature of architecture. The main hypotheses of the study are: (i) that Sou Fujimoto’s architecture can be supported on the one hand by poststructuralist theory, primarily by Gilles Deleuze’s and Felix Guattari’s studies, and on the other by the Japanese tradition of non-dualistic thinking; and (ii) that Fujimoto’s creative architectural forms inspired by nature are ...

The thesis refers to the diagram as a tool for bringing order to the essential elements of architecture (i.e. program, structure and context). It highlights the potential relationships among these elements. In this study, the 9SG is approached as a diagram that has the potential to generate different spatial relations. The thesis investigates different uses of the 9SG in reference to the...
Teaching / forming / framing a scientifically oriented architecture in Turkey between 1956 - 1982
Akış, Tonguç; Özkar, Mine; Department of Architecture (2008)
This study examines the movement of creating the scientifically oriented architecture that influenced architectural scholarship especially in 1960s and 1970s and discusses various theoretical frameworks this movement rests on. Architectural studies of the said period display rationalistic approaches motivated towards the routinisation, institutionalization and socialization in architecture, and thus an attempt to shift the discipline to scientific grounds. These studies not only develop plurality in academi...
