The present paper examines interethnic and interreligious values in Turkish and Crimean folk legends. The folklore of both Crimea and Turkey has a multicultural background, which makes both corpuses of texts suitable for research. In the course of the study, a wide range of published Turkish and Crimean legends were reviewed and analysed. There are two deeply-rooted tendencies in the studied legends. First of all, the interethnic and interreligious relationships can be described as ghastly and cursed. Thus, antagonists in the legends are often from ethnic minorities or strangers in relation to domestic ethnic groups. However, if the texts are analysed thoroughly, we can see that there are important sacred cultural values at the core of the legends, including values of life, health, and divinity.

The Discourse structure of Turkish
Demirşahin, Işın; Zeyrek Bozşahin, Deniz; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2015)
This thesis investigates the structure of immediate discourse in Turkish. The first and fore- most question is how discourse is built. Are there components of discourse that constitute a predicate-argument structure, or is discourse realized by underlying non-structural ties that are merely made explicit by these components? If there is structure in discourse, what is the nature of this structure, and what is its complexity? For this purpose, we analyze the relations annotated in the Turkish Discourse Bank,...
Cultural changes in Turkish society: a comparative study through literature of past and today
Yaman, Öykü; Özkan, Türker; Department of Psychology (2018)
This study aims to investigate cultural transformation of Turkish culture by using Turkish literature. According to Karpat (2011), social development can be observed through literature because authors express people’s traditions and values both to glorify and to criticize. Schwartz (1994) also agrees that culture can be derived from various cultural products like folktales. To observe cultural difference, I formed two time periods: (1) was covering Abdülhamid II sultanate and pre-republic years and (2) bega...
The role of the state and the transformation of Ukrainian political elite in the resurrection of ethnic conflict: Euro-Maidan and the civil war in post-Soviet Ukraine
Pehlivanoğlu, Onurhan; Sözer, Hande; Political Science and International Relations (2017-10)
This thesis examines the role of the Ukrainian political elite and the state in the resurrection of ethno-political conflicts in post-Soviet Ukraine. It firstly investigates how Ukrainian political elite’s management of existing ethno-political attitudes on the state level has caused the evolution of Ukrainian crisis from so called peaceful protests to a seemingly ethnic conflict. Secondly, it answers the question how newly emerging ruling class during the post-Soviet transition period has affected the poli...

The paper also highlights Turkey's extant economic vulnerabilities, especially its current account deficit, volatile international capital flows and ongoing banking sector problems. Along wi...

Kahraman, Alter; Aydıngün, Ayşegül; Department of Eurasian Studies (2014)
This thesis analyzes the Crimean Tatar National Movement in and outside the USSR through their publications in different countries (Lenin Bayragı in Uzbekistan, Emel in Turkey and Dergi in Germany). It consists of two basic parts: the development of the National Movement in exile, and the evaluation of the documentary research and the interviews on Lenin Bayragı, Crimean Tatars’ only newspaper in exile. Some concepts and terms, which were derived from the interviews, such as diaspora, collective memory, com...
