Settling properties of activated sludge typically establish the performance and the cost of biological wastewater treatment plants, and they are considerably affected by the solids concentration of the sludge and the mean cell residence time of the system. In this work, effects of mean cell residence time of the system and solids concentration of sludge on the settling properties of activated sludge were studied. By statistical analysis of the laboratory data, mathematical expressions were suggested to express the relationships that existed between the above parameters.

Quantifying the streamflow response to groundwater abstractions for irrigation or drinking water at catchment scale using SWAT and SWAT-MODFLOW
Liu, Wei; Park, Seonggyu; Bailey, Ryan T.; Molina-Navarro, Eugenio; Andersen, Hans Estrup; Thodsen, Hans; Nielsen, Anders; Jeppesen, Erik; Jensen, Jacob Skodt; Jensen, Jacob Birk; Trolle, Dennis (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-09-01)
Background Groundwater abstraction can cause a decline in the water table, and thereby affects surface streamflow connected to the aquifer, which may impair the sustainability of both the water resource itself and the ecosystem that it supports. To quantify the streamflow response to groundwater abstractions for either irrigation or drinking water at catchment scale and compared the performance of the widely used semi-distributed hydrological model SWAT and an recently integrated surface-subsurface model SW...
Investigation of zinc and lead removel from aqueous solutions using clinoptilolite
Moralı, Nihan; İmamoğlu, İpek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2006)
Natural zeolites, especially clinoptilolite, have the ability of removing certain cations from wastewater by utilizing ion exchange and adsorption. In this study, clinoptilolite originated from Bigadiç, Balıkesir deposit was investigated in its natural and conditioned form for its effectiveness in removing Zn2+ and Pb2+ ions from aqueous solutions. In addition, relevant mechanisms involved in heavy metal removal by clinoptilolite were examined in this study. Throughout this work, equilibrium and kinetic stu...
EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE, PH AND DO CONCENTRATION ON FILTERABILITY AND COMPRESSIBILITY OF ACTIVATED-SLUDGE
SURUCU, G; Sanin, Faika Dilek (Elsevier BV, 1989-11-01)
This study investigates the effect of aeration basin temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on filterability and compressibility characteristics of activated sludge. Laboratory-scale semi-continuous reactors, fed with synthetic wastewater were used. Effects of temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30, 35°C; pH values of 5.7, 7.2, 8.2, 9.0 and DO concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 5.0 ml/l were studied by keeping all the other parameters constant in each case. Results indicated that as the operatin...
The effects of aquifer heterogeneity on the natural attenuation rates of chlorinated solvents
Önkal, Başak; Ünlü, Kahraman; Department of Environmental Engineering (2005)
Monitored natural attenuation has been particularly used at sites where petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents have contaminated soil and groundwater. One of the important aspects of the methodology that has been recognized recently is that the mass removal rates, the most important parameter to determine effectiveness of the methodology, is controlled by the groundwater flow regime and the aquifer heterogeneity. Considering this recognition, the primary objective of this study is to quantitatively...
Treatability of chromite ore processing waste by leaching
Ünlü, Kahraman (SAGE Publications, 2001-06-01)
Developing treatment and disposal strategies and health-based clean-up standards for chromium containing wastes continues to be an important environmental regulatory issue because of the opposing solubility and toxicity characteristics of chromium species under diverse environmental conditions. In this study, leaching characteristics of total Cr and Cr(VI) were investigated using laboratory column studies. The data obtained from the experimental studies were analysed to assess the treatability of chromite o...
