Natural zeolites, especially clinoptilolite, have the ability of removing certain cations from wastewater by utilizing ion exchange and adsorption. In this study, clinoptilolite originated from Bigadiç, Balıkesir deposit was investigated in its natural and conditioned form for its effectiveness in removing Zn2+ and Pb2+ ions from aqueous solutions. In addition, relevant mechanisms involved in heavy metal removal by clinoptilolite were examined in this study. Throughout this work, equilibrium and kinetic studies were performed with as-received and conditioned clinoptilolite, having particle size of 0.15 ا 0.80 mm. Conditioning aimed to replace exchangeable cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+) on clinoptilolite with a cation that is more willing to undergo ion exchange. The results of equilibrium studies revealed that clinoptilolite had different capacities for Zn2+ and Pb2+ ions. Clinoptilolite had high capacity for Pb2+ ions, whereas lower capacities were attained for Zn2+. Conditioning with concentrated NaCl solution increased the removal capacity for both metals. Maximum capacities attained were 0.14 meq/g (as-received) and 0.39 meq/g (conditioned) for Zn2+, and 0.51 meq/g (as-received) and 1.10 meq/g (conditioned) for Pb2+. Furthermore, kinetic studies performed under pH-uncontrolled and pH-controlled conditions revealed that heavy metal removal can not only be explained by ion exchange. These studies also indicated that Zn2+ ions were weakly bound to clinoptilolite structure, whereas there was a strong bonding between Pb2+ ions and clinoptilolite structure. To examine possible removal mechanisms, relationship between exchangeable ions released from clinoptilolite structure and Zn2+ and Pb2+ ions removed from aqueous solutions were investigated during equilibrium and kinetic studies. For equilibrium studies, it was observed that the higher the heavy metal equilibrium

Effects of operational parameters on the settling properties of activated sludge
Sürücü, Gülerman; Soyupak, Salçuk (Informa UK Limited, 1989-5)
Settling properties of activated sludge typically establish the performance and the cost of biological wastewater treatment plants, and they are considerably affected by the solids concentration of the sludge and the mean cell residence time of the system. In this work, effects of mean cell residence time of the system and solids concentration of sludge on the settling properties of activated sludge were studied. By statistical analysis of the laboratory data, mathematical expressions were suggested to e...
Lead (II) and ammonium exchange on Na form of Gördes clinoptilolite
Aşiroğlu, Sedat; Yücel, Hayrettin; Department of Chemical Engineering (2006)
Natural zeolites, especially clinoptilolite, have the ability of removing certain cations from wastewater by utilizing ion exchange and adsorption. In this study, ion exchange behaviour of Gördes clinoptilolite at particle size range (0.5-0.25 mm) for lead and ammonium removal was investigated to establish the conditions under which clinoptilolite may be used in an economical and effective manner. Experiments were divided into two parts. Batch and continuous (column) experiments were carried out. In the bat...
Thiamine pyrophosphate dependent enzyme catalyzed reactions: Stereoselective C-Cbond formations in water
Demir, Ayhan Sıtkı; Ayhan, Peruze; Sopaci, S. Betuel (Wiley, 2007-11-01)
Enzymes are biodegradable and renewable resources that utilize water as the reaction solvent. Reactions catalyzed by enzymes are among the most effective, selective, and 'green' processes available today. The advantages of using biocatalysts include their high degree of regio- and stereo-specificity, versatility, and high reaction rates under mild reaction conditions. Enzyme catalyzed enantioselective C-C bond formation reactions are rather important aspects of synthetic organic chemistry. Thiamine pyrophos...
Screening and In Situ Monitoring of Potential Petroleum Hydrocarbon Degraders in Contaminated Surface Water
İçgen, Bülent (Wiley, 2017-01-01)
Incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and other anthropogenic activities result in contamination of surface water by petroleum hydrocarbons. These pollutants can have severe effects on aquatic life and human health. In petroleum bioremediation, oil degrading microorganisms are utilized to remove petroleum hydrocarbons from polluted water. However, monitoring and identifying microorganisms capable of degrading petroleum hydrocarbons is very challenging. In the current study, bacteria isolated from a river al...
Syntheses and optoelectronic applications of thiadiazolo quinoxaline bearing alternating conjugated copolymers
Ataoğlu, Emre; Çırpan, Ali; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2016)
Donor-acceptor type conjugated polymers containing thiadiazolo quinoxaline and benzodithiophene derivatives were used as photoactive material for organic solar cell. The alkoxy- substituted benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b’]dithiophene (BDT) monomer, 2,6bis(trimethyltin)-4,8-di(2-ethylhexyloxyl)benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b’]dithiophene, was polymerized with 4,9-dibromo-[1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-g]quinoxaline through a Pd(0)catalyzed Stille coupling reaction. In order to improve the interchain interactions between polymer chains, an alk...
