Gamma-ray scintillation spectrometry has been used to measure the 137Cs and 134Cs levels and depth distributions in soil of a tea plantation in the Eastern Black Sea region in Turkey. Soil samples were collected in November 1987. The depth distribution was found to be exponential with α = 0.16 cm−1 and the exposure rate arising therefrom is calculated as 17.46 μR/h over the ground surface.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sea sediments of the Turkish Mediterranean coast, composition and sources
Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (2015-03-01)
The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in 25 surface sediment samples from five sites located at Oludeniz Lagoon of the Turkish Mediterranean coast. The total concentration of the PAHs (1.85 +/- 1.39 mg/kg) was lower than the sediments from highly urbanized areas, while it was comparable with the sediments from similar locations. Acenaphthene and chrysene were dominant ones with the concentrations of 0.620 and 0.515 mg/kg, respectively. The isomeric ratios indicated th...
Cadmium removal using clinoptilolite : influence of conditioning and regeneration
Gedik, Kadir; İmamoğlu, İpek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2006)
Clinoptilolite samples obtained from two deposits in Turkey were tested for their potential in removing cadmium from aqueous solutions. Preliminary experiments in batch mode revealed inferior cadmium uptake at low pH. Particle size was found to have no effect on cadmium removal efficiency suggesting the use of exchangeable cations found in the internal/available sites. Increasing temperature yielded positive, whereas prewashing had no effect on cadmium removal using both clinoptilolite samples. The Langmuir...
RAMAN-STUDY OF AMMONIUM HALIDES TREATED AS AN ISING PSEUDOSPIN-PHONON COUPLED SYSTEM
SHERMAN, WF; Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit (1986-03-01)
Raman spectroscopy has been used to study the λ-transition regions of NH4Cl and NH4Br. An Ising pseudospin-phonon coupled model has been fitted to the observed Raman data. In particular we report here the results of fitting the model to the frequencies and damping constants of the non-soft TO component of the lattice modes of NH4Cl and NH4Br. Both crystals have the orientations of their NH+4 ions disordered at temperatures above their λ transitions, and have (orientation-ignored) Oh structures (β) containin...
Particulate and dissolved primary production along a pronounced hydrographic and trophic gradient (Turkish Straits System-NE Aegean Sea)
Lagaria, A.; Psarra, S.; Gogou, A.; Tuğrul, Selen; Christaki, U. (Elsevier BV, 2013-06-01)
The rates of particulate (PPp) and dissolved primary production (PPd) were estimated along a trajectory of variable environmental regimes formed in a narrow shelf area, following the course of Black Sea water masses (BSW) passing through the Turkish Straits System (TSS) into the NE Aegean Sea (BS-AS outflow). Seven stations in total were sampled, covering a transect from the eastern edge of the Marmara Sea basin to the NE Aegean Sea, during two consecutive cruises performed in October 2008 within the framew...
Domoic acid production by Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha Lundholm, Moestrup et Hasle (bacillariophyta) isolated from the Black Sea

A species of Pseudo-nitzschia isolated from Sevastopol Bay, Black Sea, was examined for its toxicity. The species was identified as P. calliantha Lundholm, Moestrup et Hasle based on SEM and TEM examination. Domoic acid (DA) was detected in batch culture throughout the growth cycle of P. calliantha. The production of DA by this diatom species was confirmed by fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (FMOC) derivatization and HPLC-fluorescence method. The cellular DA level was higher in the early exponential phase, with the...
