The OPERA experiment is searching for nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations in appearance mode, i.e., via the direct detection of tau leptons in nu(tau) charged-current interactions. The evidence of nu(mu) -> nu(tau) appearance has been previously reported with three nu(tau) candidate events using a sub-sample of data from the 2008-2012 runs. We report here a fourth nu(tau) candidate event, with the tau decaying into a hadron, found after adding the 2012 run events without any muon in the final state to the data sample. Given the number of analyzed events and the low background, nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations are established with a significance of 4.2 sigma.

Discovery of tau Neutrino Appearance in the CNGS Neutrino Beam with the OPERA Experiment
Agafonova, N.; et. al. (2015-09-01)
The OPERA experiment was designed to search for nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations in appearance mode, i.e., by detecting the tau leptons produced in charged current nu(tau) interactions. The experiment took data from 2008 to 2012 in the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam. The observation of the nu(mu) -> nu(tau) appearance, achieved with four candidate events in a subsample of the data, was previously reported. In this Letter, a fifth nu(tau) candidate event, found in an enlarged data sample, is described. Toge...
Study of charged hadron multiplicities in charged-current neutrino-lead interactions in the OPERA detector
Agafonova, N.; et. al. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2018-01-24)
The OPERA experiment was designed to search for nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations in appearance mode through the direct observation of tau neutrinos in the CNGS neutrino beam. In this paper, we report a study of the multiplicity of charged particles produced in charged-current neutrino interactions in lead. We present charged hadron average multiplicities, their dispersion and investigate the KNO scaling in different kinematical regions. The results are presented in detail in the form of tables that can be use...
Evidence for nu(mu) -> nu(tau) appearance in the CNGS neutrino beam with the OPERA experiment
Agafonova, N.; et. al. (2014-03-01)
The OPERA experiment is designed to search for nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations in appearance mode, i.e., through the direct observation of the tau lepton in nu(tau)- charged current interactions. The experiment has taken data for five years, since 2008, with the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam. Previously, two nu(tau) candidates with a t decaying into hadrons were observed in a subsample of data of the 2008-2011 runs. Here we report the observation of a third nu(tau) candidate in the tau(-) -> mu(-) decay c...
Procedure for short-lived particle detection in the OPERA experiment and its application to charm decays
Agafonova, N.; et. al. (2014-08-01)
The OPERA experiment, designed to perform the first observation of nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations in appearance mode through the detection of the tau leptons produced in nu(tau) charged current interactions, has collected data from 2008 to 2012. In the present paper, the procedure developed to detect tau particle decays, occurring over distances of the order of 1 mm from the neutrino interaction point, is described in detail and applied to the search for charmed hadrons, showing similar decay topologies as ...
OPERA tau neutrino charged current interactions
Agafonova, N.; et. al. (2021-08-01)
The OPERA experiment was designed to discover the v(tau) appearance in a v(mu) beam, due to neutrino oscillations. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consisted of a nuclear photographic emulsion/lead target with a mass of about 1.25 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It was exposed from 2008 to 2012 to the CNGS beam: an almost pure v(mu) beam with a baseline of 730 km, collecting a total of 1.8 center dot 10(20) protons on target. The OPERA Collaboration eventually assess...
