Durability of PEM fuel cell electrocatalysts prepared by microwave irradiation technique

Sayin, Elif Seda
Eroğlu, İnci
In this study, the durability of the PEM fuel cell electrocatalysts was investigated by using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and rotating disk electrode (RDE) techniques. Accelerated degradation tests (ADTs) were applied to the commercial catalysts and the electrocatalysts prepared by microwave irradiation technique in order to determine the platinum dissolution/agglomeration and carbon corrosion characteristics. The parameters examined for the commercial catalysts were carbon to Nafion (C/N) ratio in the catalyst ink and Pt loading over the carbon support. The parameters examined for the home-made catalysts were the conditions altered in the microwave environment including the base concentration and microwave duration. The hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) were examined before and after ADTs. The results showed that the catalyst properties differently affect the HOR and ORR activities of the catalysts before and after ADTs. Crown Copyright (C) 2012, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. PEM fuel cell short stack performances of silica doped nanocomposite membranes
DEVRİM, YILSER; Devrim, Huseyin (2015-06-29)
In this study, an air-cooled Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) short stack with Nafion/Silica nanocomposite membrane was designed and fabricated for net 100 W net power output to improve the stack performance at low relative humidity conditions. Composite membrane was prepared by solution casting method. Gas Diffusion Electrodes (GDE's) were produced by ultrasonic spray coating technique. Short stack design was based on electrochemical data obtained at 0.60 V was 0.45 A/cm(2) from performance tests...
Long term performance of an alkaline fuel cell with double layer electrodes
Eroğlu, İnci; Han, E; Turker, L (2000-06-15)
The improvement of an alkaline fuel cell (hydrogen-oxygen) performance by changing the electrode structure and manufacturing method has been achieved by employing multilayer, Teflon-bonded gas diffusion type electrodes which were prepared by the rolling method. Active carbon or carbon black was used as the support material whereas platinum as catalyst and nickel screen as the backing material. Double layer electrodes possessed the active and the diffusion layers on the backing layer. The electrode manufactu...
Preparation and characterization of sulfonated polysulfone/titanium dioxide composite membranes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells
Devrim, Yiser; Erkan, Serdar; BAÇ, NURCAN; Eroğlu, İnci (2009-05-01)
In the present study, sulfonated polysulfone (sPS)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) composite membranes for use in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) were investigated. Polysulfone (PS) was sulfonated with trimethylsilyl chlorosulfonate in 1,2 dichloroethane at ambient temperatures. It was shown that the degree of sulfonation is increased with the molar ratio of the sulfonating agent to PS repeat unit. The degree of sulfonation was determined by elemental analysis and H-1 NMR was performed to verify the su...
Modeling and sensitivity analysis of high temperature PEM fuel cells by using Comsol Multiphysics
Sezgin, Berna; Caglayan, Dilara Gulcin; DEVRİM, YILSER; Steenberg, Thomas; Eroğlu, İnci (2016-06-22)
The objective of this study is to observe the effect of the critical design parameters, velocities of inlet gases (hydrogen and air) and the conductivity of polymer membrane, on the performance of a high temperature PEM fuel cell. A consistent and systematic mathematical model is developed in order to study the effect of these parameters. The model is applied to an isothermal, steady state, three-dimensional PEM fuel cell in order to observe concentration profiles, current density profiles and polarization ...
Polybenzimidazole/SiO2 hybrid membranes for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells
DEVRİM, YILSER; Devrim, Huseyin; Eroğlu, İnci (2016-06-22)
Polybenzimidazole/Silicon dioxide (PBI/SiO2) hybrid membranes were prepared and characterized as alternative materials for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC). The PBI/SiO2 membranes were cast from a PBI polymer synthesized in the laboratory and contained 5 wt. % SiO2 as inorganic filler. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that the uniform and homogeneous distribution of SiO2 particles in the hybrid membrane. The existence SiO2 has improved the acid retention and p...
