Fluted tubes which were designed by Gregorig considering the use of surface tension forces are commonly used in evaporators and condensers for desalination purposes. In this study the surface profile of a fluted tube, which cannot be described by any conventional coordinate system is obtained numerically by using an intrinsic-coordinate system. Navier-Stokes equations are solved after some simplifications for the condensate flowing over the sinusoidal fluted profile to find the volumetric flow rate. The results are found to be in good agreement with the experimental findings.

An experimental investigation on performance of annular fins on a horizontal cylinder in free convection heat transfer
Yildiz, S; Yüncü, Hafit (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2004-02-01)
Natural convection heat transfer in annular fin-arrays mounted on a horizontal cylinder was experimentally investigated. An experimental set-up was constructed to investigate heat transfer characteristics of 18 sets of annular fin-arrays mounted on a horizontal cylinder of 24.9-mm diameter in atmospheric conditions. Keeping the fin thickness fixed at 1 mm, fin diameter is varied from 35 mm to 125 mm and fin spacing is varied from 3.6 mm to 31.7 mm. The base-to-ambient temperature difference was also varied ...
An accelerated aerodynamic optimization approach for a small turbojet engine centrifugal compressor
Ceylanoğlu, Arda; Ulaş, Abdullah; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
Centrifugal compressors are widely used in propulsion technology. As an important part of turbo-engines, centrifugal compressors increase the pressure of the air and let the pressurized air flow into the combustion chamber. The developed pressure and the flow characteristics mainly affect the thrust generated by the engine. The design of centrifugal compressors is a challenging and time consuming process including several tests, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses and optimization studies. In this s...
A theory of dropwise condensation at large subcooling including the effect of the sweeping
Yamali, C; Merte, H (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2002-02-01)
The effect of sweeping by the departing droplets on the heat transfer coefficient in dropwise condensation is studied analytically here. Using basic principles, an analytical model for dropwise condensation is devised, which takes into account the elementary processes that make up the dropwise condensation cycle. The analysis is divided into two parts: in the first part, the heat transfer as a result of nucleation and coalescing of the droplets is considered. In the second part, the effect of sweeping is in...
Heat and momentum transfer in laser induced decomposition of silane jets: theory and experiments
Akmandor, İbrahim Sinan; Szekely, J.; Haggerty, John S. (Elsevier BV, 1988-11)
Silicon powders are obtained by laser pyrolysis of silane gas. Temperature and velocity profiles are determined both theoretically and experimentally. The velocimetry consists of a marker technique which measures the propagation time of a perturbation front through the hot reaction zone. In the theoretical model, the coaxial jet expansion undergoing a thermal heating is studied by defining a Dorodnitzin-Illingworth transformation. The results show a decrease of axial velocity as the gas enters the laser hea...
A new formulation for the analysis of elastic layers bonded to rigid surfaces
Pinarbasi, Seval; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Mengi, Yalcin (Elsevier BV, 2006-07-01)
Elastic layers bonded to rigid surfaces have widely been used in many engineering applications. It is commonly accepted that while the bonded surfaces slightly influence the shear behavior of the layer, they can cause drastic changes on its compressive and bending behavior. Most of the earlier studies on this subject have been based on assumed displacement fields with assumed stress distributions, which usually lead to "average" solutions. These assumptions have somehow hindered the comprehensive study of s...
