he main purpose of this research is to determine the anomalies regarding the coal mining operations in an abandoned coal mine site in central Anatolia by multi-temporal image analysis of Landsat 4-5 surface reflectance data. A wellknown anomaly detection algorithm, Reed-Xioli (RX), which calculates square of Mahalanobis metrics to calculate the likelihood ratios by normalizing the difference between the test pixel and the background to allocate anomaly pixels, is implemented across the time series. The experimental results reveal especially the profound land use -land cover change in time series, pointing out critically abandoned regions that need immediate rehabilitation action. The rate of anomaly scores together with their relation to mine development over the focused time spectrum discloses a linearity trend as of the operations are ceased at the end of 1990s, which is indicative of the capacity of the applied method. The performance of the algorithm is also quantified with Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curves and precision-recall graphs to reveal its capability on Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) multispectral image series. The resulting plots show the increasing capability of the hyperspectral anomaly detection technique in multi-temporal data set, with a steady and slight increase in performance between 2000 and 2012 after the end of the mining activities, which substantiates the success of global RX algorithm to identify the mining-induced land use and land cover anomalies

Stability analyses of the dump site culvert in Tınaz surface mine
Özcan, Ömer Can; Ünal, Erdal; Department of Mining Engineering (2003)
In this thesis, studies associated with the stability analyses of the box-shaped dump-site culvert constructed in Tınaz Surface Mine of Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKİ) are presented. In addition, stability conditions of other culvert alternatives are evaluated. Existence of creeks in a surface mining area is a significant factor to be considered in selection of dump-site location. Since, the dumped overburden material on the valley acts as a barrier and behaves like a dam causing flood problem behind the dum...
Environmental applications of hyperspectral anomaly and target detection algorithms
Soydan, Hilal; Karpuz, Celal; Department of Mining Engineering (2017)
The objective of this thesis study is to understand the capacity of hyperspectral anomaly detection and target detection algorithms for contamination mapping, with a focus on developing a new methodology for environmental problems related to coal mining operations. Considering the data availability, specific chemical structure and reflectance properties as well as being one of the common contaminants in mining operations, hydrocarbon induced problems are studied for water and soil medium separately. Having ...
ANALYSIS OF LAND USE LAND COVER CHANGES FOR AN ABANDONED MINE SITE
Soydan, Hilal; Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem; Özdemir, Okan Bilge (2015-07-31)
The aim of this study is to the evaluate land use and the land cover changes of an abandoned coal mine in Central Anatolia. The mining activity in the region was started at 1987 and after working for 18 years, all the rights of the mine was passed to an another company which after a while the came up with no coal production since its concession was cancelled on February 2008. Unfortunately, during the life of the mine, there were no mine closure and reclamation activities on the field. There was only a limi...
Production of heavy-media-quality magnetite concentrate from Kesikköprü iron ore tailings
Güngör, Kazım; Atalay, M Ümit; Department of Mining Engineering (2010)
The aim of this research was to investigate the possibility of the production of a magnetite concentrate which is suitable for preparation of heavy media from iron ore tailings of Güncem Mining Company magnetic separation facility. During the study, three different tailings named as low grade, medium grade and high grade with 5.91 % Fe3O4, 19.06 % Fe3O4 and 37.06 % Fe3O4, respectively, were used. Mineralogical analyses of test samples showed that magnetite and hematite were the major ore minerals while pyri...
Thermal characterization and gasification kinetics of thrace-saray region coal
Yıldırım, Betül; Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2015)
In this thesis being up as-received and washed and dried, two different coal samples from Saray-Edirkoy field were experimented in order to determine effects of different variables as coal type, heating rate, gas flow rate, isothermal duration, gasifying medium, and final gasification temperature, on isothermal gasification profiles of the coal samples. In the scope of this study, heating rate was changed in the range of 20-50oC/min as 20, 30, 40 and 50oC/min whereas two different gas flow rate values as 60...
