Aesthetics of Web and Mobile Interfaces of a Learning Management System: A Comparative Analysis

2018-11-26-30
Aesthetics of a Learning Management System (LMS) user interface can be a very powerful tool for supporting learning, yet it is the least considered issue in design. This embedded experimental study researches the differences in perceived aesthetics of web and mobile interfaces of an LMS and the opinions of students about the effect of these differences on their learning. The data was gathered from a total of 128 students of a public university. The data collection instruments where, (i) Visual Aesthetics of Websites Inventory (VisAWI) for collecting quantitative data, and (ii) individual interviews with a sample of 10 students completing the inventory. This study reveals that learning materials presented in mobile devices might need design methods specific for mobile interfaces and it might have a positive impact on student learning

Perceived values of web based collective design platforms from the perspective of industrial designers in reference to Quirky and OpenIDEO
Hajiamiri, Milad; Korkut, Fatma (2015-03-01)
Web-based collective design platforms are virtual environments which highly rely on large-scale participation of people from diverse backgrounds in different phases of the design process. Understanding and motivating participants is important to enhance the diversity of solutions and approaches in such platforms. This study investigates the motivation factors for the designer members of the crowd, and explores the perceived values of these platforms from the perspective of industrial designers. An empirical...
Characterizing the development and usage of diagrams in embedded software systems
Akdur, Deniz; Demirörs, Onur; Garousi, Vahid (2017-09-01)
To cope with growing complexity of embedded software, modeling has become popular. The usage of models in embedded software industry and the relevant practices usually vary since the purposes of diagram development and usage differ. Since a large variety of software modeling practices used in embedded software industry, it is important to understand its state-of-the-practice and its usage degree while investigating the relations between its attributes (e.g., modeling rigor, purpose, code correspondence, sta...
Involving end users in retrofit of higher education buildings
Gooding, Luke; Erdogan, Bilge; Gürsel Dino, İpek (2021-12-01)
Although the importance of end user participation during building improvement design is widely accepted, selecting the best approach for the engagement of users in design processes is a significant challenge. This paper assesses how qualitative end user engagement during retrofit planning can aid the design process of energy retrofits in higher education institutions. The application of this early stage approach to make design decisions is presented via a case study, carried out in the Faculty of Architectu...
Multi-dimensional evaluation of e-learning systems in the higher education context: empirical investigations
Köseler, Refika; Özkan Yıldırım, Sevgi; Department of Information Systems (2009)
There has been little research on assessment of learning management systems (LMS) within educational organizations as both a web-based learning system for e-learning and as a supportive tool for blended learning environments. This study proposes a conceptual e-learning assessment model, HELAM (Hexagonal e-Learning Assessment Model) suggesting a multi-dimensional approach for LMS evaluation via six dimensions: (1) system quality, (2) service quality, (3) information (content) quality, (4) learner perspective...
Evaluation of basic design education at METU department of industrial design
Bayırlı, Ümit; Özgen Koçyıldırım, Dalsu; Department of Industrial Design (2015)
Basic Design is a crucial course for design education. This course is offered in the first year to initiate students to the theory, practice and communication of design and to lay a basis on which more advanced and specialized knowledge will be gathered throughout the rest of their design education and careers. However, the course's results, influence in design education and methods of conduct receives many criticisms from students, educators, designers and researchers. Even though the course plays a foundi...
