Diffusion and sorption of heavy-metal ions (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Ni, Plb, and Zn) through an Ankara clay liner were studied experimentally. The Ankara clay consists of calcite, quartz, smectite and illite, and is a highly plastic inorganic clay with optimum weight water content of 32% and corresponding dry density of 1.413 g/cm(3). U nder optimum compaction conditions, effective porosity (volumetric water content) and hydraulic conductivity in the material were determined as 0.45 and 1.3 to 2.6x10(-9) cm/s, respectively. The Ankara clay adsorbed Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Ni, Pb. and Zn metals, but desorbed Ca, Mg and Na metals for the solution concentration range used. Sorption isotherms of these ions were experimentally established. Effective diffusion coefficients of Cd. Cl. Cr, Cu, Fe, K. Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn metals, determined through column experiments are, respectively, 2.5, 9.5, 2.2, 2.9, 2.2, 7.9, 3.1, 1.6, 3.2 and 2.5 (x10(-6)) cm(2)/s. The tortuosity factor of non-reactive chloride is approximately 0.47. The factor changes between 0.34 and 0.45 for the other ions. The results show that diffusion is the dominant mass transport mechanism in an Ankara clay liner. Due to sorption processes, transported heavy metals studied in this research will be significantly attenuated in the liner. Because diffusion and sorption processes depend on solution composition, mass transport determinations in clay liners require case studies using multicomponent systems similar to those presented in this study.

Effects of compaction parameters on heavy metal mass transport in Ankara clay liner: Experimental approach
Çamur, Mehmet Zeki; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2007-01-01)
Mass transports of Cl, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn ions through the Ankara clay liner prepared under two different compaction were studied experimentally on the bases of sorption and hydrodynamic dispersion processes. According to geotechnical tests, the Ankara clay material is highly plastic, inorganic clay having a liquid limit of 73, a plastic limit of 29 and a plasticity index of 44. Optimum compaction of the material requires 32% water content and 1.413 g/cm(3) dry density. Two materials, prep...
Experimental determination of hydrodynamic dispersion coefficients for heavy metals using compacted clay
Camur, MZ; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2001-07-27)
Mass transport of ions through the Ankara clay liner, which was prepared under three different compaction conditions, was studied experimentally on the basis of sorption, advection and hydrodynamic dispersion processes. Under optimum compaction conditions, effective porosity and hydraulic conductivity of the material were 0.32 and 0. 13-0.26 x 10(-8) cm s(-1), respectively. Effective diffusion coefficients of Cd, Cl, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn ions were, respectively, 2.54, 9.51, 2.22, 2.85, 2.22,...
Solution-based synthesis of silver-platinum core-shell nanowires with enhanced stability
Koylan, Serkan; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2019)
This work describes a facile route for the synthesis of silver (Ag)-platinum (Pt) core-shell nanowires (NWs) with controlled diameter in the range of 63-96 nm. Optimum synthesis conditions were determined to obtain conformal and galvanic replacement free deposition of Pt on Ag NWs. Synthesized Ag-Pt core-shell NWs were examined using SEM, TEM and XPS. Further studies were conducted to compare the performances of Ag-Pt core-shell NW networks to those of pristine Ag NW networks. In this regard, electrochemica...
Ionic conductivity of microporous titanosilicate ETS-10 and ion-exchanged Mn+-ETS-10 (where, Mn+ = Li+, Na+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Ca2+) thin films prepared by secondary growth method
Galioglu, Sezin; Çam, İbrahim; Akata Kurç, Burcu (2017-09-15)
Impedance spectroscopy was used to investigate the long-range ionic conductivity of the microporous, titanosilicate (Na,K)-ETS-10 and ion-exchanged Mn+-ETS-10 (where, Mn+ = Li+, Na+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Ca2+) thin films prepared by secondary growth method. To figure out the effect of grain boundary on ionic conduction, as-synthesized (Na,K)-ETS-10 films possessing different thicknesses of columnar grain structure (i.e., films prepared via 4h-, 6h-, 8h-, and 10h-growth) were tested. The conductivities of the films w...
Electrochemical polymerisation of 2-aminofluorene in ethylalcohol/water medium
Imamoglu, T; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar (Elsevier BV, 2004-08-01)
Electrochemical polymerisation of 2-aminofluorene, 2AF, was investigated in ethylalcohol/water mixture (3:2, v:v) in the presence of HClO4 as the supporting electrolyte via constant potential electrolysis, CPE. Prior to CPE, electrochemical behaviour of the monomer was investigated in the same solvent electrolyte couple utilising cyclic voltammetry, CV. Electrochemical polymerisation of the monomer yielded insoluble, dark bluish-green, conducting polymer deposit on the electrode surface. Characterisation of...
