SiC particulate reinforced aluminium matrix composites are attractive materials for automotive and aerospace applications because of their outstanding stiffness and strength as compared to the aluminium alloys, in addition to the low cost of particulate reinforcement. The aim of this study is to establish correlations between ultrasonic wave velocities and SiC content, microstructure and mechanical properties of SiC reinforced Al composites, Specimens were fabricated for various volume fraction and size combinations of Al and SiC particulate by hot pressing. Heat treatment and secondary deformation process were not applied. The results of ultrasonic velocity, measurements were correlated to the metallographical examinations and hardness tests.

Investigation of texture development and Portevin-Le Chatelier bands in 5754 aluminum alloy
Aytuna, Orhan Berk; Efe, Mert; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2019)
Texture and microstructure are substantial parameters for final products which are made of non-heat treatable aluminum alloys such as 5xxx series. Optimizing these parameters is possible via deformation processes and following heat treatments. In this thesis; hot and cold rolling operation, as a basic deformation process, was applied to the aluminum and resulting copper, brass and cube type of texture was investigated. Effects of different annealing parameters on the deformed specimens were also analyzed wi...
Analysis of magnesium addition, hydrogen porosity and T6 heat treatment effects on mechanical and microstructural properties of pressure die cast 7075 aluminum alloy
Alat, Ece; Kalkanlı, Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2012)
Aluminum alloys are having more attention due to their high specific stiffness and processing advantages. 7075 aluminum alloy is a wrought composition aluminum alloy in the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu series. Due to the significant addition of these alloying elements, 7075 has higher strength compared to all other aluminum alloys and effective precipitation hardenability characteristic. On the other hand, aluminum alloys have some drawbacks, which hinder the widespread application of them. One of the most commonly encounte...
Analysis of heat treatment effect on springback in v-bending
Sarıkaya, Onur Turgay; Darendeliler, Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
Aluminum based alloys have wide area of usage in automotive and defense industry and bending processes are frequently applied during production. One of the most important design criteria of bending processes is springback, which can be basically defined as elastic recovery of the part during unloading. To overcome this problem, heat treatment is generally applied to the workpiece material to refine tensile properties. In this study, the effect of heat treatment on springback characteristics of aluminum stud...
Analysis and design for aluminum forging process
Öztürk, Hüseyin; Gökler, Mustafa İlhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
Aluminum forging products has been increasingly used in automotive and aerospace industry due to their lightness and strength. In this study, aluminum forging processes of a particular industrial part for the two different alloys (Al 7075 and Al 6061) have been analyzed. The forging part, forging process and the required dies have been designed according to the aluminum forging design parameters. The proposed process has been simulated by using the Finite Volume Method. In the simulations, analysis of the p...
Investigation of mechanical property changes after MIG welding of (7XXX) series aluminum alloys
Okay, Sena; Ögel, Bilgehan; Batıgün, Caner; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2016)
There is an increasing demand for aluminum alloys not only in aerospace industry but also in automotive industry due to its low density. Welding is the most effective and commonly used joining technique in those industries, therefore, aluminum welding plays an important role. 7039 aluminum alloy, is a high strength alloy and it is suitable for armor applications. Like other aluminum alloys, after MIG welding, remarkable decrease in strength is observed and therefore applications are restricted. The aim of t...
